Ex-South Africa captain Graeme Smith on BBC Test Match Special Posted at 12:32 Never in my time have I seen Jimmy Anderson charge down and wallop it over cow corner for six.
This is the perfect 10th wicket partnership. Scoring quick. Slapping the ball around. Making the bowlers look shit. Saffers must be furious.
And lordromford picks up the last wicket........
Not at all. That wicket had been coming since Jimmy strolled out. It would have been a great partnership if they'd made 20 in 30 balls. As it happens, they made about 40 in about 25. Terrific work. (Ok, maybe 'perfect' was a bit much. )
Yet another fine innings from Moeen Ali and a shame that he didn't make another hundred. Surely he must be our greatest ever batsmen when batting at 7 or lower?
Overall average - 36.62 (63 innings/ 7 not outs) Batting at 1-6 - average 26.27 (30 innings / 0 not outs) Batting at 7 - average 87.75 (11 innings / 3 not outs) Batting 7-9 - average 47.04 (33 innings / 7 not outs)
33 innings in that lower position is no small sample (albeit 7 not outs) especially as it forms more than half of his overall outings at the crease.
He's had a curious batting career, I guess than other than his brief spell opening, No 6 is the highest he's ever batted normally
I guess going at 7 gives him the freedom to chance his arm, and attack tiring bowlers

He's opened 6 times and batted once at 3. But he has batted 12 times at 4/5 and 11 times at 6.
Today's player's lunch at Lords. Reassuring in a world of protein shakes and dietary supplements to see chips and Cheery bakewell with custard still on the menu!

Well that's Mike Gatting's lunch sorted. What's everyone else having?
But seriously, he isn't the long-term answer, he's not even the short-term answer. If you don't want a wrist-spinner then there's always Rayner or Leach

Cracking six from Jimmy to take us over 450!

So, goes the chance of both debutant captains making a century in the same Test for the first ever.
Only Tony Greig faster for England
Bowling superb.
England need to get Dawson bowling again!
