Montreal - Hotel Recommendations etc

I'm going to be in Montreal for a few days in October.
Anyone been there and got any advice on good hotels. Looking for a great location (old town?) and high standard but doesn't have to be a 5*.
Plus, what are the "must do's" in Montreal - interested in history, culture, good food. Fit and active but not overly sporty - so nothing like mountain biking ta.

Went there eight years ago, the cheapo place I stayed in is now much plusher and called Zero 1 - round the corner from rue St Catherine, which has lots of bars and restaurants (had some seedy bits too, not sure what it's like now).
The old town's worth a wander, Parc Mont Royal is worth looking around (and has some great views), the old Olympic Stadium also worth a look. If you can speak French, you'll get a lot more out of the place.0 -
