me .. been staying in Manchester since the Oldham game .. having a good time so far, it's an interesting place
I had considered that option, but decided against it in the end. If it had been in April or September, it would have been a good opportunity to stay in the Peak District as well
It's nice to have some time to have a good and leisurely look around a place I hardly know .. there are some very interesting museums, galleries, shops and old buildings in Manchester and Mancunians seem to have a lot of civic pride, always ready to have a chat about 'their town' .. I am staying just off the M62, well north of the city proper .. I drive into Oldham, free park and ride, then catch the tram into the centre .. the tram system covers a BIG area, using a car in central Manc, like in most towns nowadays is just futile
EDIT .. was planning to go to the football museum this afternoon .. but the place was rammed with St Etienne fans, they play Man U in the cup tonight .. OB are out in force .. surprisingly there were a few rowdy St E fans in town but the majority seem well behaved and I saw a few in the Science museum doing the cultural bit .. they speak a very bizarre dialect of French, sounds more like German
Me. The family are away for a few days, and I enjoy a train ride. (Train from Euston). It's my first away match outside of London, and my first on my tod. Grandad would think I'm bonkers (although he might have got me a free train ride). Expecting to see the team battered, which other teams have realised is the way to beat us.
But you never know....
I love the fact that the grandson of the manager who (amongst many notable achievements) won the FA cup for Charlton has become a regular poster on here and talks so much sense. I also love that you are trekking up to Rochdale on your own-even in the current circumstances, you have truly caught the bug! Please keep up the good work @JamesSeed !
For the last 50 years I´ve been a ´follower´ of Charlton. Happy to be invited to occasional events at The Valley, keeping an eye on results, sending the occasional fax to the club on promotion.
But events (some good, some sad) conspired, and the next thing you know I´m travelling away to Rochdale. @Henry Irving and @SE7toSG3 played their part as well. Cheers for that guys.
But joking apart, it´s given me a massive amount of pleasure, despite the problems at the club and the lack of recent success. This forum, and you guys who post here regularly, have played a part as well, as has the excellent @CharltonLive
Singing ´The Red Red Robin´ with my mum, and then to my mum, as she succumbed to dementia is what started it though.

You've got this Charlton supporting thing all wrong. No one supports Charlton for the pleasure, what on earth are you thinking ? It's more of a pennance

Forgot to mention the Swiss bloke who was at afc flew back Monday and is flying over for Saturday's game
I spoke to him and his girlfriend at Wimbledon and he comes over to England 6 or 7 times a season to watch Charlton. Now that is a propper Charlton fan
The fella is Charlton only, does not follow a team back home.

When the Oxford match was postponed and we knew anything arranged would be too soon after Mr F's op, we decided a quiet day with the family would be the best option.

Blimey James - your first away match outside London and you choose Rochdale! I suppose it can only get better from here. The secret, in my humble experience, is to make a day of it and try not to let the football ruin it for you. If you start drinking at 10am on the train, you should be in the right frame of mind to 'enjoy' the match. I hope you have a memorable day whatever the result.

Well done to those that make the trip.
Hope Mr F is ok Fanny
Thanks so much for your concern, Len.
The op went well & he was doing OK but the dreaded painful catheter is now causing him some problems...
It's due to be removed on Tuesday so hopefully progress will continue apace after that.

I went to the football museum on Wednesday, well worth a visit, I hadn't been since it relocated from Preston
I like Manchester, I also paid a quick visit to the Science museum (I've been there before), you can see the new Ordsall chord being built (to add a proppa Charlton train reference)
Am driving up from near Stansted to Ormskirk tomorrow morning to take a look at a horse for my daughter, (Wife doesn't drive motorways, that's why I am roped in). Shame it wasn't a bit nearer than an hour away, otherwise I would be there to kill some of the mundane hours I will endure whilst sitting around, oh well hope they have 3/4G up there for the match thread
Sitting on the Manchester train, and on the shuffle comes a song I remember so well from a previous journey to Piccadilly to watch our boys. We felt it then, not because we were at a very low point, but because we knew we were heading in the right direction. Even though we lost that day. ..
Our immediate outlook is less certain. ..but things can only get better eventually, can't they?
