Ulvestad did well at CB.Byrne was left exposed at first, which is a bit reckless as he isn't a defender.Watt is a strange individual,but he took the goal well.What gets me is why we try to play out from the back,we ain't Barcelona,you've got to cut the cloth accordingly.Still 10 players out injured must hurt,and i don't think getting rid of Robinson is the answer, he's got ideas above his station but we need some stability.All in all a decidedly avarage match.2

We were completely outplayed for the first 20 minutes and then okay after that. Ulvestad looked very assured at CB - worth playing him there again?1

Watt up front on his own in the first half was never going to work.

If you look back at more or less any report of mine on our plethora of home draws, then you will realise it is the same story.
of course there are nips and tucks and nuances, but yet again we played an honest hardworking team with something about them who were no mugs.
The key word every time is TEAM.
We were without any sense of coherent linkage until about the last half hour after Watt had clawed us back into it. We could have easily lost after that but we held on, but the key aspect is that it takes an experienced class player to actually introduce shape and structure to our efforts, that player being Jacko.
Walsall were a proper team, even with their weaknesses. We have strengths, but are seemingly unable to combine our attributes to create a real force as a team.
1-1 was a fair enough but disappointing result, made a lot worse by watching Konsa go off, then again the saying goes 'if you can't win, don't lose' and we didn't lose.
Hard to single anybody out in particular, nondescript is the best description of our efforts today where overall we were pretty insipid, and pretty boring too.
Mind you, today became a whole lot better when I heard the rumours going around.5 -

Agree with above post Ulvested looked very comfortable at centre half.
Page is just plain awful.

A poxy formation to start the game, which led to one of the worst opening 15 minutes I've ever seen us play.
1) Watt wanders too much to be a lone striker, leaving us with no forward for much of the time
2) Nobody seemed to be playing right midfield, leaving Byrne (a makeshift RB) marking two players. They're left back had acres of space until Chicksen was moved over to RM
We were better in the second half, though finished the game being overloaded on the left hand side instead with Chicksen marking 2 players again
Ulverstad was very good at CB, Chicksen was lively and put in the best crosses of the match, Watt took his goal well, Novak won a few headers when he came on.
I had no idea where Aribo was playing, other than one cross he contributed little going forward, but didn't track back enough either.2 -
Dire first half, better second half.
It's not so much that he plays 4-2-3-1, it's that we are so rigid in that system with no real pattern of play. 4-2-3-1 is supposed to be flexible in the front four, with plenty of movement. When Walsall got it down and passed it, they played through us too easily. There's too much space between players. When we had the ball, you couldn't see what we were trying to do as a team.
Watched Aribo closely today. He would be more effective as one of the two central midfielders, with a licence to drive forward alongside the holding midfielder. He is more of a Yaya Toure in style, than a Deli Ali, who is more mobile with quicker feet. Coming onto the ball from a deeper position would suit him better, than being amongst the bodies further forward. Walsall played the experienced Chambers on him, who limited his time and space in advanced areas behind the CF. Aribo has the power and passing ability to play as a midfield runner driving forward and playing through balls.18 -

pleased to read that Ulvestad brought a bit of class to the passing from the back ..
T Watt, Lazy ? .. t b h I can tolerate one lazy player in a team so long as they do their job, i.e.scoring goals ..
no disaster today, Walsall is a decent team and we are still managed by a chancer who is noway getting the best from the talent at his disposal .. I await my next game at the Blades with bated breath3 -

Terrible first 30 minutes, players looking around wondering what was going on.
Can't understand why Robinson didn't try to replicate Tuesday's starting line-up and formation as closely as possible. Were there that many injuries?!
Chicksen proves he's a better LB than Page, but is played wide on the right. 442 worked well with Noves and Josh up front, so he starts with Watt up top on his own. With Josh injured, why not just swap him for Watt? Or was Novak not fit enough to play 90 mins?
The most promising performance was that of Ulvestad at CB, where he looked completely assured, like he plays there every week. He wasn't put under a huge amount of pressure, but even so his defending was spot on, and his distribution unflustered.
Tex had a decent game, as did Byrne and Chicksen (once he was moved to LB). Konsa and Aribo both looked elegant (although they're both a bit too 'nice' possibly), and are going to get better each year. Let's hope we get to watch their development at The Valley rather than on TV.
Jackson is looking ok in his proper position again, and his leadership qualities make a difference.
Just before our goal was discussing whether we'd actually had a shot of any description. But Watt took the chance well.
Wallsall looked quite good at times. Had the chances to beat us.
The man from the Sun said he'd seen worse games this season. Poor sod.

All the hard work Powell done in league 1 has come to this. Today was the first time ever I wasn't glued to my phone refreshing Twitter feed or the match thread and listening to Charlton player to see what was going on.
Today was the first time I felt no emotion at all with Charlton. I'm feeling something I've never felt before and it feels awful. Just a complete loss of emotion.

Wouldn't disagree he is on the lazy side. However playing him up front on his own when he is neither good in the air or quick is rather stupid IMHO. Watt now has a bit of confidence. His goal was terrific, plus he forced their goalie into a fine save. Maybe he will find a bit of form. I think Aribo needs to be rested, if possible. Holmes is very good at this level, so positive. Just when you think he will lose the ball he beats another player and worried the life out of the saddlers. I am surprised Page has so many low marks as he did pretty well and did a great run in the first couple of minutes beating maybe 4 players and he also tackled well. I hope Konsa is okay.
Walsall missed at least two open goals. Like most of the teams we have played recently they are better going forward than defending.
Pretty dire game overall. Should have stayed at home to watch the rugby.1
