MK Dons Could Have Been Us !

The attached newspaper clipping is from April 1973 and shows how we were considering becoming MK Athletic, some time before . Wimbledon moved. Thought I'd pull this out before tonight's game.

    Read it again

    "Stolen FOR" not "STOLEN FROM"

IE I was nicking it to tweet on the museum's twitter account as it was an interesting bit of history. Thanks for posting it.

Doh ! Sorry Henry I must use those reading glasses more often. Apologise. Also not just now that club fell out with fans.

6th April 1973 was Leaving valley.
Think Rochdale game was same year. I was there if I remember correctly Rochdale already been relegated at that time

Another version. It was dire I think the crowd was less than 1500 and about a third of it was Charlton.

So we could be in the same-ish league position but be playing out of Milton Keynes... glad we stayed in London, we are easier to get to here.

Great clippings. An era charlton fans probably don't recall fondly.

Has there ever been a moment in our history where someone hasn't tried to f**k us over. The club is cursed I tell you.

RD should have bought MK Dons.

"Manager Theo Foley went into the crowd to speak to the fans."

    ... fast forward ...

"Manager Robinson went into the crowd to speak to the fans. Ten minutes later, everyone within earshot had lost the will to live."

IIRC the attendance was 890 or thereabouts.

    I remember this well.
No one really took it too seriously, Michael Glikstiein was really guilty of posturing and using this wheeze as a form of leverage......it pretty soon died a death and sure enough, nothing more came of it.
In reality, we were never even close to moving.

  • I wonder if these Middle Easterns will finally be the next big thing in the Football League, or just another lot that have ill intentions.

It seems only Man City and PSG have really ended up with decent owners from that region - The rest here in England (can't really speak for any clubs elsewhere in Europe) seem have ended up with bigger problems, rather than the pot of gold over the other side of the rainbow.

MK fans should at least be relieved that these owners are already involved in Football with Kuwait SC, but I'd still be cautious. Especially as I can't see many fans here being overly disappointed if it does go tits up for them.

I don't know, I remember chanting, "we're  fucking rich" when Tanoon the Buffoon and his mates took over and we thought Charlton had more money than Man City. That feel good feeling went on for a good five minutes.

  • I just can’t believe how mad that whole period was.

If you asked me to try and set up a scene pretending that I was a rich Middle Eastern business man who has taken over a football club.

Considering I have no money, or creativity this is what I would have come up with.

I said this on another thread, but this could be a success or it could be like the Russian owner who bought Reading from Madejski and nearly destroyed it. Both clubs financed by and transformed by a local businessman and genuine fan, who eventually sold out to unknown overseas buyers.

What a fantastic library you have, FCF. It's great to know what we'll read people Charlton fans are.

Hopefully they move MK to Kuwait and call them Kuwait Dons.
