I'm a bit surprised. I think he'd have got them up with time.
Sunderland's squad really isn't that good.
But then he signed most of those players, they had a massive turnover of players in the summer. The salary cap has been a problem for them, it seems that most of their signings were after it came in (7th August)
Parkinson was never going to get them promoted this season. Still a good manager who will easily find another job in league 1. I doubt he will be out of work to long.
The Sunderland owner is looking to sell, and has been for months. An OK bit still a bit of a mediocre season's start for the club has probably ensured that Short thinks a new broom might sweep away the bad recent history, get promotion, ensure a sale and put a good few million back in his bank account(s)
Parkinson is invariably brought into clubs that have limited resources and then gets criticism for them not playing attractive football. He got sacked by Charlton and replaced by Powell who soon discovered how crap the squad was- it had to be rebuilt at the end of that season.

We forget some of the players Parky had to work with- possibly with good reason. Some great names from these squads.
Sparky had to make do with Paolo Abbotski and Powell bought in Shaun Wright -Philips for real money within a couple of weeks of joining so not exactly a complete rebuild at the end of the season. I remember Parky paying for one player in part out of his own money. Parky inherited a poor team from Pardew and had no money to really build because Pardew spent shed loads on average players.
I wonder what would have happened if he had had any money at Charlton..we will never know.
Looking at the squad that Powell had the following season you can see the upgrades..
Of course he knew before taken the job that Sunderland always have high expectations, but being sacked when 5 points off automatic place with a game in hand seems harsh.

Yes, there were more than 10 of them, because Jenkinson was sold for more than a million. However Wright -Philips was a mid season 2 week post Parky Parky upgrade for around £250k.
How much was Paul Benson ? He relied on Danny Green for assists who ironically never really played with Green at Charlton Benson went to Swindon in Jan 2012 .
Quite frightening how many bad players we had in some of those squads. I'd forgotten a lot of them.

Did we pay a fee for Benson?
Edit: Doh spur of the moment post, absent owner is still owner. mind was elsewhere :-)
6 goals in 36 games for Ruch Chorzów didn't quite seem to be enough on that ocassion.
Always have respect for Parky, some absolute shite in those squads.
