The 80s had a kind of 'synthesised' sound almost everywhere. SA&W made a fortune taking famous actors, mainly from down under, and manufacturing songs for them. I'm not sure that any of them actually wrote a hit between them.
The modern day has equally manufactured pop stars except that they are 'made' live on out TV boxes on any of the crappy shows like X-Factor that makes music artists that have a fan base before they ever sing anything other than a cover song.
Like StigT says, it is all about what floats your boat. I was well aware of the Neighbours et al actors in the late 80s, all be it that I didn't watch their TV shows but you could fill the East Stand with the X-Factor finalists and I wouldn't know one of them if I asked them all to stand up for me to get to my seat after half time.
