The left do like to pigeonhole people without actually understanding what people want.
Pissed off with being told what I should think or 'believe in'. And extremely pissed off with someone half my age telling me what I should believe in.
When I was bought up, this kind of brainwashing was known as nazism not socialism.
So you're 124 years old then. You might think it ok for a "socialist" to take honours from the crown but you're wrong. At best if you do you believe in some sort of equality but you're not a socialist. Socialists do not accept that a single family inherits the right to be head of state. Again read the philosophy.
Oh well that's 50 years of my life wasted. And all of those thinkers over the last 100 years or more who have defined socialism as being something separate from a monarchy. It's a bit like people who eat fish but insist they are vegetarian.
No one has said it yet so I will, congratulations Billy Connelly! An incredibly funny man who has done much good charity work and who is now battling personal health issues on two fronts. I am no monarchist by any stretch of the imagination, but there is no way that I'd begrudge him an award.
The fact is, whatever social/political/economic system you believe in, we all live within a capitalist constitutional monarchy and until the day that changes we all need to work within it in order to survive. What's the logical conclusion of shunning anything to do with the royals? You'd have to stop using money, it's all go the queens head on it. Don't post that letter, it'll be the Royal Mail that takes it. And should Charlton ever make it to a Cup Final (unlikely, I know), you can't attend because it'll be a member of the royal family handing the cup over.
I have the utmost respect for those who personally choose not to accept awards for they truly have the courage of their convictions. For people to decree that others cannot accept awards is, I believe, contemptible and is the sort of thing that gives socialism a bad name. What sort of socialism is it you believe in, if you think it is about restricting others freedoms?

Don't be stupid.
If you want to continue to spout outdated political dogma in the 21st Century then good for you.
Perhaps you need to remind that nice Mr Corbyn and his fellow Labour MPs when they swear allegiance to the Crown next week that they're not socialists.
The statement about him being a socialist is crass and insulting. It shows there is a rabid ignorance around this and in these cases putting people in category boxes is not helpful and I am sorry to say it, ignorant.
No socialist would, or could, accept a knighthood. If you are a socialist by definition you're not a monarchist. If you're not a monarchist you can't accept a knighthood. So he has at the last betrayed what he said he has been for all these years. Or in language he might understand he's a shit of the first degree.
Bloody hell, old, not very well bloke earns well deserved recognition from his country and some want to dissect his political beliefs. Surely he gets to decide his own politics?

The socialist mantra is do as I say not as I do. That inherent hypocrisy and implicit authoritarianism is why it ultimately lacks credibility and legitimacy in my opinion.
Billy Connolly entertained a lot of people for many years. It's his choice as to whether or not accepting an honour conflicts with his political ideals. He has met a lot of the Great and the Good over the years. Maybe he wants to formally join them.
The Earl Attlee would turn in his grave! But then I'm sure iainment doesn't consider Clem to have been a socialist.
Billy Connolly is, in my opinion, the funniest man on this planet and consequently he is more than deserving of this recognition. A comic genius and my comedy hero long before he ever appeared on Michael Parkinson!
Personally, I get the impression the young Billy Connolly is a different entertainer/animal to the one who has spent time and career in Hollywood. Would the young Billy have been accepting this award? Who knows, but maybe he feels quite honoured to be accepted so visibly by the establishment, which admittedly, he used to rail against. Our perspectives often change over time, rightly or wrongly, and I think, if it makes him feel good, then fine, good luck to him. He was a towering talent, and brought with him a lot of laughs, and challenged a few ideas in his time. If people have to have these awards, then personally, feel Billy is by no means the worst person to have been given one. Maybe, a few more awards for selfless nurses, fire fighters, police etc would be good, but that is a debate for another thread. Well done Sir Billy, and you looked dead chuffed about the murals. You clearly mean a lot to people.
Oh well that's 50 years of my life wasted. And all of those thinkers over the last 100 years or more who have defined socialism as being something separate from a monarchy. It's a bit like people who eat fish but insist they are vegetarian.
Or just they haven't heard of Pescetarianism.
Which is not vegetarianism.
Again that's not right. pesco-vegetarian is a branch of vegetarianism, just the same as a vegan, lacto, ovo, lacto-ovo etc.
Again, things aren't as black and white as you make out, that's the beauty of life in a way.

You're 62? There's no fool like an old fool...
Some things are black and white, some are more nuanced. In my, long held opinion, honours from the crown have a tarnished value. Especially if you believe in republican politics rather than monarchical ones. Honours from the people, from your peers well earned would mean much more. At the end of the day my opinion might not be agreed by most but as with all opinions it has it's own validity. I do think there sometimes is a group think pack mentality here that licences personal attacks rather than a considered discussion. Which is why I largely ignore the political threads. If I have personally offended anyone that was not my intention and I apologise for that. But this old fool won't be swayed unless there is an argument that trumps mine. And I'll leave it at that. For now.

Arise Sir Billy, The Big Yin of Glasgow

Sometimes, comments on this website astound me.

Congrats to the Big Yin.
What a strange thing to get upset about!
