A really good result against a very decent League 2 team who reached last season's play-off final. The commentator had a lot of praise for Dillon Phillips and for three of our young lads, Regan Charles-Cook, Karlan Ahearne-Grant and Anfernee Dijksteel. Reeco Hackett-Fairchild also seemed to liven thing up when he came on and a goal from one of his three efforts would really have been the icing on the cake.
The win guarantees that we'll have seven games in August (including the Checkatrade), so our youngsters will certainly get further opportunities to impress and reinforce their positions in the squad. One thing I would like to see in Crofts' suspended absence is Dijksteel getting a game in central midfield, as I think he'll stake a big claim to move himself up the pecking order in what is his best position.
It looks like we'll be one of the 25 unseeded teams who will be drawn against one of the 25 seeds, including 13 Premier League teams.
What an excellent game, all the young players were excellent, full of energy and passing. Aribo was superb with Djikstele just behind, KAG also ran them ragged. Excellent finish from RCC and the young sub Hackett-Fairchild (what's his name Henry?) instantly had them on the back foot which we were lacking before he came on. Konsa was also excellent as our fullbacks played quite high. Phillips also made some superb saves.
What an intelligent player Billy Clarke is as well he really calmed it down when it was needed and found space always. Sarr was shaky at the beginning but grew into it without ever dispelling the belief that something could go wrong, they targeted Jacko and it came off several times. Crofts actually had a decent second half and from where I was sat a yellow would have been harsh but the ref had been weak all night and I thought we had three decent penalty shouts. He did start giving us free kicks after the sending off though which he hadn't really done all night.
Tony Watt was I am afraid bang average at best (and I think I am being generous as on a slight high) and Reeves needs game time but showed glimpses. The away end was packed which I think surprised everybody. We could have been better in front of goal and sometimes took too many touches but that was sort of within the context of the way we played i.e. keeping possession and not wasting opportunities. HF should have put Billy Clarke in for a third at the end but went on his own, I can imagine the senior players telling him what to do in the dressing room.
Just in case I haven't emphasised it enough our skill, control and movement were all excellent and if that is the kind of performance we can expect then we are a bit closer tonight in getting our Charlton back (normal Belgium caveats apply).
Excellent performance and result, great to see some of the youth team playing so well and to be in the hat for the next round. I am midly optimistic from what I have seen so far this season, COYA!
Good win. Made 11 changes and played them off the park in the last 30 minutes. Sounds like we could have had 10. Credit must go to Robinson as he's had 22 players largely playing well over the last two games. The red cards are a concern, sounded absolutely daft from Crofts. I think you can ask the question about whether or not Robinson instill the right mental discipline in them but I'm not sure what you can do about a 33 year old midfield making a seemingly needless reckless challenge in the 84th minute.
Good run out for Reeves, got almost 60min under his belt.
This should be a real confidence boost for the youngsters in the team-Charles-Cook, Dijksteel, KAG, Phillips. Don't even count Hackett-Fairchild as the boy was born for the Champions League and we're just a temporary stop for him.
We all dream of a team of Reeco Hackett-Fairchilds, a team of Reeco Hackett-Fairchilds
I think Crofts has that in his game, I watched the two PSFs in Dublin and he could have been sent off in each of those for tackles from behind late-on in the game. Maybe old-age or fatigue play a part. My point is: I agree with you, this is more likely a Crofts issue than a team issue. (Novak likely trying too hard)
Crofts moves to tackle them when they are alongside and by the time he gets there it's a late tackle from behind.
No time for this "referees conspiring against us" nonsense. We're doing well. Cut this shit out.
" But it’s Charlton and they see we’re on the right way up and they don’t like it. So, keep doing it. I’m sick and tired – when people try and do things the right way, I tell my players not to dive, not to be aggressive surrounding the referee. It looks like a lack of discipline on me. And it’s not. It’s good, old-fashioned tackling. Imagine Matt Holland or Mark Kinsella. They’d be sent off every week if they played in that game today."
Also, if a tackle is "a red card in the modern game" that means it's a red card. Sort your team accordingly.
Got a message from an old uni mate who is an Exeter fan. Says the Crofts red card wasn't anything like intentional and wasn't even a yellow. Just said it was a 'bizarre and odd decision'.
Don't know why it is fashionable to have a go at Karl. I can't help but like the passion and real desire to do well that he shows.

Agreed. Like Robbo, but agree with this. Refs might be a bit crap, but they don't conspire.

I'm largely very supportive of him and think he's doing a good job, and I'm usually the one defending or contextualizing some of the things he says. But for me, this is completely unnecessary. If you disagree with the decision, fine, disagree with the decision. But the whole "the referees are out to get us" it's like C grade Jose Mourinho nonsense.

I agree, I was far enough away not to be certain but it looked like a debatable free kick, when Exeter fans started shouting 'off off' it looked like the ref reacted to cheers.
For those talking like its been yonks since we won a cup tie, we won an FA Cup 1st round game last season, and got through 2 rounds of the league cup the season before.
In fact I think weve won at least one of our cup ties every season for the last few years??

Have great memories of that classic Charlton cup run a few years ago, 4 nil vs Colchester then a narrow 1-0 defeat to Derby in round 2

Shhhhh let us have this moment, we haven't had a cup tie win to celebrate in years.
Just got back to our holiday cottage near Bude, had a cuppa & now ready to report on tonights game.
A well fought win against a fairly decent League 2 side. Lots of chances for both sides, with Phillips making 2 excellent saves & his only fault was his kicking. The back 4 played well, with Sarr & Konsa both excellent in the air & on the floor. KAG ran them ragged n the wing & I think that's his best position as I don't think he has the composure in front of goal to be a striker. TWWW played ok in the first half but quickly faded in the 2nd. Reeves didn't really impress me much - had a few good touched but didn't really influence the game. Charles Cook had a quiet first half but came more into during the 2nd half & took his goal well. Hackett Fairchild created an impact off the bench & showed that he can stretch defences when they tire towards the end.
Thought we got away with the first disallowed goal - didn't seem much of a push to me, but then the Crofts sending off was a joke - a yellow card at best. Classic TWWW ball-in-the-corner job in the last few minutes involving KAG, JJ & Clarke, with JJ v nearly getting a 3rd right on full time.
All in all a very pleasant evening - apart from the price of the tickets which I took up with their ticket office upon purchasing 1 adult & 3 kids tickets for £53 !! - but I expect they need it to pay for all the balls they lose by not having an away end !!!!!!
' If that was Charlton's second string then I really am impressed and I hate to think what the first choice 11 might have done. Extremely quick passing and movement that threatened to rip us to pieces at times but then disappointed in the goal area. ' A quote from an Exeter forum
"Imagine Matt Holland or Mark Kinsella. They’d be sent off every week if they played in that game today."
The game certainly isn't what it used to be. Gone are the days of Matt Holland breaking legs every week and only getting booked 5 times in his Charlton career.
Animals like him sadly couldn't survive in the modern game.
Sounds like a good performance and great to see so many kids playing. I wonder if this means we can expect KR to take the fine and make wholesale changes in the Checkatrade too.
This is not a dig against KR, as i'd say it whoever our manager was but this comment is ridiculous: "The assistant referee gave it, he was stood next to me. How’s that a red card? But it’s Charlton and they see we’re on the right way up and they don’t like it". Unless the lino was a Palace or Millwall fan, i'm pretty sure he couldn't give a shit that we're 'on the way up'. However i do like what he's doing, the players seem to like him and we're starting to play some decent football.

Pleasing result and anyone who gambles and didn't back us at 3 to 1 or better wtf are you waiting for
I'd start Phillips now. Looked good when filling in for Rudd last season, and was excellent tonight by all accounts.
And haven't we won 6 and drawn one of our last seven matches? Not played any of the top clubs during that run though.
Ah, so that's why Duchatelet hasn't sacked Robbo yet.
"Charlton could have scored double figures tonight. Having said that I thought we did quite well. They had some very decent quick attacking players."

KR out
Well done Charlton - not there myself, but I reckon Jacko deserves all the credit
