Karl Robinson once again rung the changes, nine from Saturday's starting eleven, and it proved too much against an efficient Norwich side. Novak's early goal offered some hope of cup progression, but Norwich dominated the game and ran out comfortable winners.

Robinson: “Here today, the two last goals were deflections and they got a bit of luck and their finishing was excellent. But we had a chance at 1-1 when we simply had to score, Josh Magennis had a chance at 2-1 which was better than all the chances that they created, which we didn’t take. I’m pleased that we gave our young players another chance. This is the philosophy, ethos and DNA of Charlton Athletic – that young players should be given an opportunity. It’s a tremendous learning curve for them. It tells us an awful lot about where some of them are at. They’ve played in front of a big crowd against a team that will be competing at the top end of the Championship because of the quality they’ve got.”

Jackson: "We had moments that we could have exploited better to have given ourselves more of a chance. But from a coaching point of view it was a great learning night for some of the young lads to come here and play in front of a good crowd, on a good pitch, in a beautiful stadium. Norwich more or less put out the side that have been playing with in the league and it was a great test for us. Unfortunately, we’ve come up short but it gives our young lads an idea of the level that you need to be at if you want to go on and play at this level.”
