I was in Cuba Sunday night, quite relieved to not be there now. Fingers crossed for those who may be affected
I'm in Cuba Monday....good luck all and stay safe
I groaned at that. It seems you're going to miss it though.
The Times has a good page with maps of the potential paths it could take. Limey brings up a good point about it swinging west being the worst potential outcome. Right now that looks pretty unlikely, fortunately. But it still looks possible that this will make landfall on Florida as a Cat 4.

Could be damage to airports all over the Caribbean, might not want to leave until you know you can land. Power could be out all over the place as well, for a while.
Hope everyone in Florida and along the coast survives with as little upheaval as possible. Truly terrible for the country to be hit be two of these in two weeks.
I am in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. We are not expecting the hurricane to make landfall, but it will pass near enough to our coast to cause enormous damage. Most of us gringos live in concrete hotels and houses and should be safe, but the local people will suffer terribly from flood damage.
From a personal standpoint, I am hoping for the best and wish everyone stay safe. From a professional(insurance) standpoint the global insurance market and Cat bond market needs this to be another big one which will hopefully pull up global Insurance market rates.

Stay safe LG. I've been speaking to friends from Puerto Rico who have been trying to prepare and are now just hoping for the best. I'm worried for them because where can you go on an island?
another friend in Florida mentioned that their local 7/11 is charging $38 for a $4 pack of water. That must be illegal?!?

Yes I was being serious. These incidents are truly tragic, the loss of life, people homes, possessions etc I wouldn't wish it on anyone. but from a Insurance perspective global disasters are a good thing for the Industry.

I'm not sure that's entirely true or that the market as a whole agrees although pockets will.
Although as a market everyone would like increased rates, particularly reinsurance and retrocession, I do not agree the insurance industry 'needs' another big one, far from it.

There, in a nutshell is pretty much where we've arrived in society. Lives will be lost and some of the poorest people on the planet will see what little they have destroyed but, you know, somebody in the global insurance market is going to make a packet...so it's not all bad eh!

They are also predicting Storm Jose following Irma to be upgraded later today to a hurricane.
I know we moan about the weather in this country but we really do live in a sweet spot compared to most. We're very lucky we don't have these extremes in Western Europe.
Someone on here old enough will know what i'm talking about.
I'm pretty old, late into computers though. Not sure what it's got to do with Irma?
As CAFC-West picked up on, but not many else, i'll explain... In the 80's, IBM green-on-black terminals were known as 3270's,... in the first wave of PC's you used to have to install an IRMA Card to enable the PC to emulate a 3270 terminal.

And are still used to this day as I had to install Opentext software for PC's to connect to 3270 terminal.

Spot on. What sort of selfish fucking wanker would post that? We're absolutely ruined as a society - Bill Hicks had it right.

Price gouging is illegal most places after a "State of Emergency", is declared, as there has been in Florida.

I have shares in Lockheed Martin - So really can't wait for KJU or DT to push the nuke button. Sure....a few million will die but I reckon I'd be able to get a new motor out of the appreciation in stock price.

Every cloud eh?

Probably the most offensive post I've ever seen on this forum.

So you're hoping to make money from people dying ? Unbelievable.

Offensive yes in that a so - called profession operates in such a callous way but give him some credit for being honest enough to confess to those professional standards and ethics (or lack of them).

When several members of this forum have spoken about friends / family in Florida, I'm not sure this forum is the place to be boasting of such a shitty lack of basic compassion.
Client has cancelled my trip now, Im gutted from a personal point of view BUT from a personal point of view hope everybody stays safe and @All_Thaid_Up doesn't get a new patio from the uplift in insurance claims
Note careful positioning of but....
Edit: that last line is only a "t" away from being lifted straight out of the shit yourself thread....

"Everything said before the word 'but' is horse shit"

Let's hope the storm blows out enough to not cause any damage.
