In my ITN days I'd sometimes be sent off to interview a 'celebrity' who I previously thought was dead. Leslie Phillips was one of them. And I was delighted to discover that he was just like his screen persona; funny, engaging & charming, especially towards our attractive producer. The complete opposite of someone like Michael McIntyre in fact. Or Slipknot who look scary, but were very ordinary, polite boys when the masks were off. One of my favourite interviewees was Dame Vera Lyne who wasn't just friendly and down to earth, but was also really interesting, and keen to share some great stories when the camera was off. Our young producer hadn't realised she was still alive prior to the interview. We used to have a 'which celeb will be next to go' sweepstake in the crewroom.
