Sandy Denny and Aretha Franklin from the women. Elvis and John Lennon from the men. Denny and Franklin arguably the best ever British and American singers respectively.

Matt Monro, best Bond song ever

Not forgetting The Italian Job, - On Days Like This , simply brilliant, always sends a shiver down my spine.
Does it for me too but more for the Lamborghini Miura than the song.

Art Garfunkel and Matt Munro for me. I wasn't born 'til the 70's and only recently discovered Matt Monro.........Just wow. Apparently named by Sinatra as one of his favourite singers.

This is going to be as impossible as the guitar riff thread. It seems that we all love virtually all the riffs, and all of these voices had their moments and are admirable in themselves.
It is often about those moments that touch a place deep inside, and the time when that happened.
I wouldn't have any of his stuff as a Desert Island Disc but Elvis Presley's voice had a way (to quote Lou Reed) of getting to the centre of your head.
Voices are definitely a matter of personal taste in my view.

Everyone mentioned on this list... Billy Fury wasn't bad either.
  • Muma Cass, Karen Carpenter or Dusty Springfield for me had the best female voices.

Bill (You’ve lost that living feeling) Medley, Righteous Brothers, tall one.

One of my all time favourite songs ever, that Cilla had the audacity to cover and crucify!

  • Marvin & Aretha top my charts.

But agree that Matt Munro was very special too & taken far too young.

Surprised that no one has mentioned Jagger?

Really? Great front man with a distinctive voice, but he's far from being a great singer

Well....look at some of the others that have been mentioned, they could also be described as front men/women with distinctive voices but not particularly great singers. In fact most mentioned can arguably come into that category wouldn’t you say?

What odd reasoning.......so you have decided that Jagger isn’t a great singer and yet some of the others mentioned above are......that just doesn’t make sense mate.
Incidently......I’m no great fan of him.

Well, not all people are great, but the names that pop up like Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Steve Marriott and some of the crooners clearly are great singers, and famed for their voices

But it's best voice, not best singer, a great tone and great timing sometimes beats a pitch perfect vocalist.

First name that came in to my head was Steve Marriott.

Same here, my ultimate front man from that era.
Another vote for Marriott from me. Robert Plant was a bit of a Small Faces groupie and based his delivery on Stevie.

Love the stones excellent band, great songs but Jagger isn't, imho, a great voice.
