Big Sam has his critics but he doesn't half know how to drill a defence together, he's made a career out of it grinding results out keeping teams up in the Prem more often than not.
A good idea, as we definitely aren't as good in defence as we should be, when you look at the players we have.
Robinson was a striker, while both Bowyer and Jackson are midfielders (other than a few games for Jacko at LB) so we don't have that much defensive expertise in the dugout
I don't think we have a defensive problem as such - the problem is the way KR wants us to play, which leaves us venerable to counter attacks & a weak midfield.
His dodgy dealings that got him sacked as England manager didn't exactly paint him in the best light.
That being said, I've only ever had respect for the way he gets his teams to play to somehow find a way to grind out results and stay up season on season. Hated it when he was doing it for the Nigels...
We know we have the flair players to make things happen but sometimes we're a bit soft at the back and if he can help us with that for a bit then he's welcomed by me.

I've said this for a while and it's quite apparent that the defence as a whole has not been performing as well as it should.
I thought he was after the vacant USA coaching job long term, no?
I think it's a one off or temporary arrangement, as it says a "clinic".
We must have a higher percentage of supporters than most clubs, who actually don't want the team to win. I find it unbelievably frustrating.
I understand where you're coming from mate and even though this site is by far the largest of the fans forums it is still only a small percentage of the total fan base so the messages can be misleading with only a small minority actually wanting the team to fail.
I am pretty sure most fans still want the team to win every game but some will also have the morale dilema of Alardyce being employed by / connected with the club following his sacking by the FA as others did with Bowyer given his past misdemeanours.
It's each to their own but no major drama for me and if he can help tighten the defence then what's not to like. He will no doubt preach that defending starts from the front and I can't recall any of his teams playing as expansively as KR favours, some improvement however will be better than nothing.
To think I used to be proud that the word integrity was associated with CAFC.
Because we all know how much integrity Pardew had, don't we?
I got absolutely slated on here for being the first to call for him to be sacked.
I want us to win every week, of course. I just prefer it to be under a manager/regime I can be proud of. We had that for long enough with Lawrence, Curbs and Powell, so forgive me for thinking it should be possible.
Former England manager who kept both palace and Sunderland up recent years. Did wonders at Bolton and only failed at Newcastle. Short term to help our defence ! Don’t see why people can moan about this! Let’s get freyere or what ever he was called back, or the Irish coach from last year!
I wonder how KR feels about this? You occasionally hear of defensive / midfield coaches coming into a team but they are NOT usually household names with a CV like Allardyce.
You don't even need to say his surname. 'Big Sam' and everyone knows who you mean.

You bastards Charlton I can't believe you're trying to improve the squad performance.
If it's purely for a coaching role sign him up.

Good idea imo
