I had a short trip to one of our offices about 10 years ago in February, so I'm afraid that my knowledge is both limited and out of date. We stayed in the Radisson in the centre of town and when I went into a local bar/club around the corner after dinner, the guy on reception asked me, in all seriousness, "Do you have a weapon ?" Suffice it to say that I didn't hang around in there too long.
As @moutuakilla says, the cathedral with the gold dome, Cathedral Saint Alexandar Nevski, is really worth seeing and has an interesting museum of art and other artefacts downstairs. I also really enjoyed a walk in the snow the next day in a big park nearby, which I think was the Borisova Gradina. It had a large, slightly down-at-heel football stadium and a number of massive statues of muscular men and women, which looked like Russian-inspired tributes to the worker.
I endorse what others have said about the proliferation of 'ladies of the night'. You expect to find them in hotel bars but I was a little surprised when my rather unworldly colleague found himself being solicited whilst lighting a candle in the cathedral.
Got attacked two days after the game when minding our own business, milking cokes on a severe hangover in a lovely park. Wrong time wrong place.
Stated in the Rodina hotel that had prozzies freely operating esp in the top floor 'brothel'.
Re nights out there was a Main Street that had a few bars - one of which was called Jim Beams. Unbeknown to us for about 5 hours it actually had a club attached underneath. The fact so many people walked into the bar and didn't re-appear should have been a give away. Anyway we had two cracking nights in said club, rolling out about 6am both nights.
The women are incredible. Lots of beggars and stray dogs from memory's though.
I was there on business in 2015 and 2016. I have to say I liked it but found it a bit limited. I was in the RadissonBlu in the centre, whuch was nicely located. Lots of bars and restaurants. All a bit old and crumbly, but worth a visit.
Great memories of a weekend in Sofia back in 2001. We went to the Sofia casino ... great experience if one appreciates the bunnies bringing you drinks At the restaurant (typical Balkan food) we were told of a nightclub called Caramba . My God, there was a reason it was mentioned in the list of best bars of the world. Lots of Bulgarian maffia guys, but Tarantino's Titty Bar was nothing compared to this joint. Sadly I see it doesn't exist anymore ... Now for the downside: if you take a taxi, they'll try to rip you off. If you ask a local for a nice restaurant ... you'll be send to some nephew's restaurant ... and will get ripped off. If you buy something ... remember you're in the European counterfeit capital. A single malt after dinner dram, a nice sigar ... it's probably fake ... So, with some research yoy can have a great trip, but watch your wallet !

Cheap as chips too.
Loved the big soviet statues.
Would only go with the lads.
