Rather sadly I have realised that i was confusing the two. It was Len Martin whom I was thinking of. I just heard a clip of Tim Gudgin on the 40th anniversary of Grandstand, and thought "hang on, why wasn't he doing it right ?"
"Right" was always reading the score with a certain emphasis to assist people checking their pools coupons many of whom were not footie fans. Martin would ensure that his voice was always higher reading the winning team, and evenly modulated for the crucial draw.
But Tim Gudgin was doing the horse racing results in that period, it seems.

Everyone who followed him in that role, especially on other channels, seemed like an impostor.
