Pick up stolen from Eltham

  • Caught a couple of guys with a laptop parked next to my Jag in a work car park a couple of years ago. Was alerted as they had somehow managed to set the alarm off from inside their parked car.

Colleague blocked them in and after grabbing the laptop I accidently dropped it into a convenient water butt. Kent Police weren't interested, so we left it at that.

Had to get the car towed as they'd done something to the management system and it required a reboot. Was told that if I hadn't had the car chipped they would have had it away as there are commercially available software programmes that fools the car into thinking the keyless system is present even when it's not.

All witchcraft to me, but it seems makes most modern cars as susceptible to theft as my old Mk1 Escort.

I have a CLA merc. A week ago got in it to go to work and contents of glove box all over the floor but nothing was taken. Someone just told me whoever did it may have plugged in computer and downloaded key info to return for it later anyone heard of anything similar and or know of anything I can do to make it secure

I'd pop to maplin and get a motion sensor camera to pop on the dash.

That’s the scary thing, it’s one thing having a scaghead smash your passenger window and rifle through your car or even nick it.

It’s something else entirely to think people are running advanced computer programs with blue chip technology to steal high-end cars, makes you wonder what the bloody point is in having a decent motor.
  • no point having any thing decent some no good wrongun will only try and nick it.

Some bastard would only smash your window and nick it.

A mate had his sat nav nicked by this route. After he'd had a new window fitted, he left a message on a post-it note on the window saying "sat nav already stolen - don't bother". He came down the following morning and his window was smashed again. A toe-rag had written "Just checking" on the post-it note and stuck it to his steering wheel.
  • Does this affect all cars?
    Are some better than others.

I remember i used to be able to get into my Ford Cortina using a screwdriver in the lock.!

A pair of scissors to get into my Austin 1300 and start it.
  • You guys wanna try owning a motorcycle and holding onto it. Stolen at an alarming rate these days and police are so under-manned, they simply don't have time to give a shit...........
  • Was looking to upgrade my mercedes this weekend as finance is coming to an end and had to take the car in for a vehicle inspection.

When I got the car the spare key had this silver fob on the key ring. Never thought anything of it and it’s sat in my pants draw for three years.

Gave the dealer the keys at the weekend and it turns out it was a key to the service department where they keep all of their customers vehicles overnight and new arrivals that need a service before going on the forecourt.

The dealer said they usually have about 30-40 cars in there that I could have driven off without alerting any kind of security.

    How does that even happen?
  • I just get the train everywhere. Only people doing any nicking are the thieving bastards in charge of Southern

There’s a very good chance your vehicle will be nicked soon

They use an iPad that reads the key code from inside your house

And open your car door via the iPad

This sounds really stupid and something you shouldn't have to do but if you put your keys in the microwave and close the door (without turning it on lol) it blocks the signal the key is giving off and stops them being able to nick it.
  • It wasn't easy either - my mate wrote "Battery disconnected electric cut off and chain n padlock thru steering wheel and prop shaft disconnected and it still got taken."

Looks like professional job, but still puzzled as to the market for it. Even the parts have a very limited "audience", and classic car owners/rock n rollers are a fairly tight knit bunch. If it's going anywhere in Europe it will have to be heavily disguised not to be recognised by someone. Unless it's just some petrolhead who is happy to look at it sitting in his garage...

Algarve, they wouldn't of drove the car off it would of been lifted on to the back of a truck.

If you don't fancy doing that - there is this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/222691729330?chn=ps&adgroupid=50138193029&rlsatarget=pla-398785764220&abcId=1130076&adtype=pla&merchantid=119016689&poi=&googleloc=9045997&device=c&campaignid=1030309342&crdt=0
  • Can you pay the extra and have a normal key?

Wife had the car key in her hand bag, dropped her off at shop while I parked and waited. When I went to drive off to pick her up obviously the car would not start. Thank god I had not waived her off on a train!

A key would stop that happening. Really can’t see the point of keyless. Clever trick but not fit for purpose.

    Yes obviously, Smiffy.
  • Posting this for a fellow Addick who isn't a member, hope admin don't mind? This classic vehicle was stolen from Eltham yesterday, pretty distinctive as you can see. Any info gratefully received.

That is truly gutting, I live just around the corner in SE9 and used to love hearing the beep burble of that wonderful V8. Thieving f***ers.
