The 4 minute mile was a real achievement back in 1954 as it had eluded the best runners in the world for so long even to the point that some questioned whether it was even humanly possible.
Even today, nearly 64 years later, with the improvement in standards generally (whether or not chemically assisted) breaking 4 minutes for a mile is still respected in the athletics fraternity.
RIP Roger, a man truly deserving of all the plaudits received during his lifetime and those to come over the coming days
Roger was a member of my running club, Hillingdon AC, before going to Oxford, our mile record is still only 3.58.44, less than half a second quicker than his best
