Had my results this morning, out of 32 samples, 4 were found to be cancerous!

Further consultation in two weeks time to plan treatment. Likely to be off work for a couple of months!

First thing they said was do I have a brother, which I do. Tell him to get tested immediately, which I will.

Guys, Tracey has done an amazing job in highlighting Prostate cancer, if you've been putting it off, don't, go and get tested!

Hope you get better news Ben.

    Hi Al

When you have your consultation in a fortnight, the key question you should ask is "what is my Gleason score". The Gleason system is the generic measurement system to determine to level of seriousness of the symptoms. It is a calculation based upon the number of cancerous prostate samples verses the total number of samples taken from your examination; plus the spread of the cancerous cells (all in one area of the prostate of spread over a wider area of the prostate).

Simply for comparison purposes only, I had 12 samples taken, of which 4 were cancerous and my Gleason score was considered low.

Best of luck for your consultation in a fortnight.
Hi Peter, if that is the one that ranges from 6-10 with 6 being good, I scored a 7!
You may want to look on the internet for a full explanation. The total of 7 (in your case) is arrived at by aggregating two scores. I personally find the formula as baffling as the Duckworth Lewis cricket formula, so you may need to ask your consultant to interpret the figures for you.

Both my GP and my sister-in-law GP and her professor husband say the test is inaccurate, and causes many people to have procedures that they don't necessarily need. However, there's no other test available at the moment, which is partly why we've been out there fund raising.
There have also been some new treatments announced recently that are less invasive. I think they were on the BBC News website.

The Gleason score is not a test; it is a formula using the data from the biopsy regarding number of samples found to be cancerous and the number to be found non-cancerous.

  • Reading Al's news has made me even more determined to join the guys on the ride to Amsterdam next year. I've no idea what I'm doing and I haven't been on a bike since I was in my 20s (leave it Memhet) But I'm determined to give it a go...........

Thanks Tracy, I'm a little out of the way down here but I'd be delighted to join you if and when I get to some sort of standard. Its more a case of when to start, how much to do and how often. And of course a bike, I haven't the biggest budget and some of the prices are frightening.

Great value road bikes at Decathlon, even cheaper if you get one second hand on eBay. I know they’re a giant chain, so if that puts you off you could try your local bike shop first.
If you’re not into drop bars they also do flat bar road bikes.
  • Wishing you all the best @essex_al For a speedy recovery

  • Largely due to this subject being posted on here, I again got my PSA level checked. I am glad I did as mine had reached just over 6, and the GP has referred my to the local hospital\specialist. I was a bit disturbed that my previous test done at my old Health Centre was not recorded by my previous GP?

Being nearly 67 I assumed that they would repeat the test instead of referral, but my currrent GP wanted to refer me, so I agreed. I certainly think it needs investigating. If you are over 55, you can I am informed request this test at your GP. Hard to think of a reason why you would not want to.?

I appreciate it is not a perfect test, and factors can affect the result. To me it seems like a 'no brainer'.

Thank you for sharing and if I can help in anyway please let me know.
We have a football to Amsterdam Prostate Cancer page. It’s for all the riders and 90% are men. They have all been posting their concerns being refused the PSA test. Especially as we all knew Paul Dear who passed away at 60yrs old from this disease.
One of the men have have made a petition to the House of Commons to give all men aged over 50 to have the right to have a PSA test from their GP.
As soon as it goes live I will post on here in the hope everyone will sign it.

Last night I went to my Mums 70th birthday party. Family and her friends.
On my table was a man who is dying from Prostate Cancer. He is in his 60’s.
Two weeks before I met a man in his 50’s who was told about the ride I was doing. I sat crying with him and his wife as they had found out two months ago his body was riddled with cancer. Originally from Prostate Cancer. He showed me his scan and I was shocked at all the black dots showing where the Cancer was. He will be dead in two months.
Whilst I have breathe in my body I will keep fighting to stop anyone else’s family having to go through the loss of a dear loved one just because “the test is not conclusive”

The world needs people like your goodself.
  • I’m saddened reading this that people appear to have to fight their doctor to get the test done

It may be one of the small benefits of private medicine in the US that they will routinely check you anything they can charge for.

My annual checkup includes a whole battery of blood tests, including the PSA since age 50. And regardless of the test result, you get the old personal inspection thrown in.

If nothing else, it establishes a trackable baseline over years.

    Good luck to everyone affected,

@tracey I know we conversed on twitter (ab54666) but think I need to man up and do the ride next year, so count me in if it happens. Not sure my BMX will be any good though so will need to get myself a) a bike with gears and b) learn how to ride again and c) a resemblance of fit, I struggle running a bath!

Lol. I was the same. Hadn’t been on a bike for 20yrs! But within 3 months I went from 6miles to 60, a mountain bike to a hybrid then a road bike. It can be done and you have way longer to get prepared. Registration opens sometime in August and I will let you know when it does. Think it will sell out very early so we need to get in quick.
  • Well done @Tracey incredible work that you do.
