Portsmouth fan

Just wanted to say that you were the best fans we have had at Fratton Park for a number of years. Outsung us in the stands and outplayed us on the pitch. Kept Pitman and Lowe quiet all game and any team that does that nullifies any and all of the threat we have.

You should go up, from what I have seen, better than the other 3 teams occupying the play offs.

Good luck for the rest of the season!

  • Cheers Mate - Good luck for next season
  • Fair play mate.

That away end certainly provides for a good atmosphere.

Your local police were top drawer, knew how to talk to the fans and a lot of them had smiles on their faces.
  • Always had a good time in Pompey - win or lose. Proper fans for the most part and of course like us they have endured some pretty tough times over the years.
  • you boys played the occasion a lot better. Straight from kick off you were on us and we were not up for the fight. Thought the police escort to and from the ground was a bit overkill, wasn't aware of any trouble?
  • Our two clubs have a long and colourful history of playing each other. Usually eventful, Portsmouth always well supported, and nice to see a great club climbing back. Best wishes for the future.
PS. There is a six minute video from the game from a Portsmouth perspective, and the very last shot is a magnificent one of Mr Portsmouth giving it the finger with both hands, awesome image of somebody who has a hotline to loving and supporting their club, I hope he lives forever.

We've said similar about opposition most of the season at the valley
  • I am an addick for 60 plus years, but born in Pompey which I left as a baby. I have always retained soft spot for the club, and still talk about the best half back line ever, Scoular, Frogatt, Dickinson. You have always best one of the best bunch of supporters, and my hope now is to see you back at the top. Look forward to playing you in the Championship soon.

Including, in particular, Pompey at home. They knew it was a big day for us, and Jackett knows The Valley well. I had kittens every time Lowe got the ball near our box.

Now, what has changed since then?...
  • Cheers mate , the worst ( best for visitors ) thing Pompey did was put a roof on that end. Pompey will be pushing next season , good luck
  • spoke to a pompey fan on the way back he said its a 3 year plan, 1st year hasn't been bad.
  • I was at the game at Fratton Park when Jimmy Dickinson played his 600th game for Pompey.
Mike Bailey (our skipper that day), presented him with a silver salver on behalf of all at CAFC to mark the occasion. It took place on the pitch just before kick off.
I would say it was around 1962/63.
  • Love fratton park. Proper old traditional ground where you can feel the passion from the fans. Don't get that at these 'new' stadiums such as emirates, mk arena, the amex.
  • Yes, always like going down to Pompey away. First time I went was in 1980/81 promotion season. Lost 1.0 and got a proper soaking that night on the open away end.

Due to the lack of a decent London derby this season Pompey was always going to be the best away day. The importance of last Saturday's game just made it even better.

Those would have been the Southampton supporters amongst the boys in blue?

Not sure they've had much to smile about since appointing Mark Hughes.
What a shame after they did so well to get out f league 1 and back into the premier league.

More about the general antipathy between Pompey and Southampton bearing in mind Portsmouth lost.
  • I doubt you'd get many Southampton smiling at Charlton

They deserve all they get for appointing Hughes. Trust me - I know!!

Yes, talking to some fans in the Lidl afterwards, they're delighted with their first season back in L1. A club on the rise, and doing it the sensible way after the financial disasters of the past

First game I took twin air horns too

Wettest I've been at a football match until Yeovil.

My wife and I had one encounter with Hughes. Man Utd had just won the title at Southampton and they were staying at the Hilton near Eastleigh as they were at QPR on the Monday night. We bumped into a few of the team and they were all very pleasant, even Steve Bruce when I thanked him for the pen he'd given away at Selhurst a week or so before, but we were in the bar when Hughes walked in and belched a couple of times and thought it very funny. Took a dislike to him straight away.
  • Remember going to see an evening game at Fratton Park and sure we won 2-1and Colin Walsh scored? So long ago - 1993?
  • We do have a pretty decent record there. Only remember one tonking for us down there. A 0.4 Boxing Day defeat. Pretty sure Mark Hateley scored at least one for them that day.

Yes, my ears have just about recovered!

How times change. Remember in the second half Phil Walker was warming up near us and the Pompey Sailor mascot was also in the vicinity. The Pompey on the side started the N....r chants. Our fans responded with "I'd rather be a N....r than a poof!

Brilliant! Those were the days before the PC police ruined everything!

Fuck me, I've been a user on here since its inception and along comes young Tommy Boy and racks up more 'likes' in one post than I've managed in 12 years.
Not that you are bitter! LOL.
