2 goals (1 a pen ) for everyone’s favourite ex Addick in a World Cup qualifier today against Antigua and Barbuda, ended  2-2
Assuming that’s a pretty good result for Montserrat (based solely on my assumption that Antigua must be a bigger island).

The sort of game where covid restrictions actually have no impact on the size of the crowd.

Very good result... Montserrat are ranked 183rd in the world... Antigua are 126th

They've also got El Salvador (69th), Grenada (159th) and US Virgin Islands (207th) in their Group

They lost both games against El Salvador (2-0 | 1-0) in the CONCACAF Nations League a few years ago although might be a bit of a grudge match for Montserrat as they missed out on a place in the Gold Cup (the North American Euros) to El Salvador on Goal Difference, only there was debate that the latter had used a suspended player in their last game

Need to win their Group to stand a chance of advancing to the final round (where the likes of Mexico and United States await) but even if they finish top of their group they'll have to play one of the other five Group winners from this current stage if they want to advance.

Its the same scenario for Liam Millar and Canada who face Bermuda today

Does population matter? How many of the squads are made up of local players? I’m guessing lots of squads are made of of conference level players using grandparents island of birth to play internationally football and an expenses few days away

Don't think population is all that important, more the extent of football culture - eg China, India aren't as good as you would expect for the population!

Doesnt help either that Montserat had that Volcano erruption in 1995 - Wiki says that two-thirds of the population was forced to flee to primarily to the United Kingdom leaving just 1,200 on the island.

    Studied that in Secondary School

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soufrière_Hills#1995–1999_eruption

Crazy who you look into it at how much of the island is in the exlcusion zone now with the old Capital: Plymouth now a ghost town

About 20 players out of their 23 man squad play in England, mostly for non league teams (including the likes of Erith Town and Sevenoaks!)
  • Scored again last night. A 90th minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw with El Salvador.

Sounds like Montserrat could give Ireland a run for their money!

Players from Dartford, Sevenoaks, Erith Town and Welling United all called up for Montserrat, including Lyle Taylor's brother who plays for Sevenoaks

Montserrat's population has been decreasing ever since Soufirere Hills volcano went off, I think. So it isn't a sustainable national team.

Edit. Just checked, halved since 1990 to 5 000 people

I suspect that he will rejoin Bowyer at Birmingham.

I suspect last year will be forgotten as it was when Curbs signed Parker for the Hammers.

Bowyer might despise him as much as we do

Don't think Taylor will care that much as long as he's still getting paid

You do populations as well oohaa?

    Wow!
  • I said this last year but largely got disagreed with but here goes again. It really does matter how many people live in a place to warrant an international team. It is absolutely and totally ridiculous that Lyle got injured and effectively got us relegated last year because he was playing international football for Montserrat, a country with a smaller population than our North Stand holds, that's even assuming all Monserratians are even interested in football. Lets say only 20% of them are - that means Lyle is playing to please c1,000 people . If I was paying his wages last year I would have made it totally clear to him that he could not leave to play for them. It was a catastrophic error of management and ownership at Charlton and the biggest reason we got relegated and why we are likely to spend 3 seasons in Division 1.

Doubt Birmingham are going to pay him £20k a week in league 1 and if they won't pay him what he's on at forest then I can't see him moving

I always thought the population thing was about probabilities. i.e. if you have 300+ million football-addicted people, your chances of having a number of brilliant footballers in a generation is high.

And if you have a population of 5,000 then it's incredibly minute.

So you would be happy to tell someone not to represent his country the world's biggest football tournament just because, through no fault of his own, that he came from a small country?

If you was in that position would you accept it?

Population matters very little if the people don't care about the sport, otherwise China, Russia and the US would be world-beaters.

And on the flip, New Zealand would be crap at rugby.
