4th is the correct answer (Manicmania was first with the answer and wins 5 points)
England reached the semi-final in 1990 and were knocked out by West Germany on penalties. They lost the play-off for third place to hosts Italy. It was the only game of the tournament which England lost in normal time. It also marked the end of Bobby Robson's time as England Manager.
No African teams are present in the current Round of 16, the first time this has happened since 1986 (killerandflash was first for 5).
England v Scotland in 1872 was the first official international match (AddictsAddick). It took place in Partick, Scotland and ended in a 0-0 draw. The closest the crowd of 2,000 came to seeing a goal was when Leckie of Scotland landed a shot on top of the tape stretched between the posts. Crossbars hadn't been invented. The second match, in 1873 took place at the Oval cricket ground and the first-ever international goal was scored in a 4-2 victory for England.
The last item comes from a book "Wicked World Cup" by Michael Coleman. Might try and dig out one or two more curly questions while we wait for the Columbia game.
Kane
Croatia Belgium Switzerland
Here's a quiz question for you .... Four players went out of the World Cup today even though their shared country of birth is still in it, name the country.
Another interesting stat is 6 of Portugal’s 23 man squad that they had for this World Cup was not born in Portugal.
Sorry for taking over the thread!
