Phillips cost us there when he conceded that equaliser if that’s Amos he saves that all day long. Phillips can be as home grown as he likes but he’s proper out of his depth
As Bowyer said in the sky interview after "why is their striker getting a free shot from edge of the box!!??" I don't see my striker having free shots like that"
Basically blaming no one but saying no bugger closed him down!!!!!
Went for a run straight after the match to get the feeling of last minute winner for Sunderland off of me.
I was very impressed by the first 30ish minutes. We pressed well, had good intensity, interchanged well, that 3-5-2 seemed to have a good mix of flexibility and rigidity, which is what you get when one of the three center halves is a fullback. KAG, sorry, KG looked very bright. Taylor looks a handful, as he always did against us. Aribo's technical ability is wonderful. Lapslie ran around a lot but in doing so closed the ball down and created space for others.
We were a bit lucky to see it out to halftime. Bauer was caught napping on their corner and then they had that scuffed shot that almost lead to an equalizer, which Bauer perhaps could have been more alert to (I thought he looked off the pace today) but it was also a scuffed shot that fell perfectly to their forward.
Second half we sat back in large part because we ran out off legs. We seemed to go to a flat 4-4-2, or just in general lost our shape, which is worrying in the first game of the season, and Sunderland were able to pull us out of position. During the entire second half our shape just wasn't good enough, some of that was down to us tiring, but there were also times when players got sucked out of position unnecessarily.
Their opener was obviously a mistake from Phillips. I'm not entirely convinced by him, but I also don't think that that one mistake makes him not good enough. In the build up Pearce both missed his interception and then didn't close Maja down quickly enough.
We did have a little spell after their opening goal where we put them under a bit of pressure but without JFC's set piece delivery (and ability to pick a pass or create a moment of magic) we didn't create anything of note.
The winner was a sickener but arguably no more than they deserved.
As has already been said, for the last 20 minutes we were playing with 10 men because of Lyle Taylor being dead on his feet. Credit to Karlan for continuing to chase. But if you're Bowyer, I don't understand why you bring Ajose and RHF and not bring one of them on. They are better than literally nothing, which is what Taylor offered toward the end (not his fault, he's coming off of an injury).
Fine Ajose doesn't hold up the ball well, but he can at least chase and hassle their defenders and deeper midfielders to hopefully slow it down from coming back at us so quickly. Or bring on Maloney to add a body in midfield, or Sarr to add another central defender. Literally anything. And to those who have said they're not fussed about Magennis leaving, this is what we have instead. Obviously he was never likely to stay, but I think he could have gotten a lot of joy coming on with 20 minutes to go against two slow center halves.
To Lee Bowyer's credit, he has not only kept this team going but seemingly built a real team spirit during a ridiculously difficult off season. Nothing takes away from that, and that's more important than any one match.
Perhaps the most bittersweet moment in all of it was imagining Fosu and F-Caskey (let alone Marshall and Reeves) in that team ahead of Lapslie and Marshall. We desperately missed JFC's ability to pick a pass and his dead ball delivery. Obviously we always miss Fosu. It wouldn't give us a squad but it would at least make for a strong first XI.
Some real positives from today. But also a lot of signs of a squad that is young, desperately lacking in depth, or both, as well as a young and inexperienced manager. Obviously it's the first game and a sample size off one, but I expect this season we're going to be saying those kinds of things pretty often.
Not quite sure why Ajose didn’t replace Taylor, who was gone by 65 mins. Or bring on one of others to freshen midfield. I guess Lee Bowyer has the answer to that one.
There is only real person to blame for the mess & that’s Duchatelet. Let’s not play blame the goal keeper or AN Other youngster or half fit player. Given the thinness of the squad & the age of some of the players, the team is really going to need proper whole hearted support this season.
So, some are already scapegoating young Phillips. Absolutely ridiculous after five minutes in the game. He might have done better with the first goal but no-one was expecting the shot and he might have seen it late. It was well-struck and scraped inside the post, so not an easy save in any event. He actually got a hand to the powerful header for the second and with a tad more luck it could have won us a point. I thought he had an alright match, all things considered. Give the kid a break please.
This Belgian cnut is breaking my heart, pure and simple. Maybe this football club has been too large a part of my life than is healthy, I have often debated that with myself and other sufferers. Someone unconnected looking in may find that statement dramatic and over egged, but I am feeling bereaved to be honest. We have never been brilliant, with a few notable exceptions, but this football club feels gutted to me, and just how I feel.

First half we were by far the better team. That was clear. Sunderland offered nothing, throughout the whole game really, as silly as that sounds! A huge kick in the teeth to loose it like that, and as said previously, we all knew it would happen. It’s a shame the player who scored the winning goal, scored it in the added time he created by nearly breaking our captain’s ankle. Where does that leave us as a club. Not one sub till it was forced says it all really. We have nothing left. I think that game sums up what’s ahead. We’ll be good in spells but won’t have enough to win games. We’ve always had form for last minute balls up but this one feels a lot truer. It’s gonna be a long long season with no sign of anything changing. And what do we do as fans. Roland has stripped every last playing asset we have and still wants £50m! Do we go down sparrows lane and give bottled water to our future? Do we take them a bit of fruit too? Do we build a blokckade at the top of Floyd road and abandon a match? As much as that is detrimental to our great club maybe it needs something that extreme. I know that won’t be supported. But this is the biggest season we have faced in deacdes I feel as a club. We are rationing water and not feeding our own. Roland has ruined EVERYTHING I love about this great club.

We must get rid of him.
Come on Charlton.
You know what, with media coverage, that would be one smart idea.
Just back in from the game, awful 6 hours to get up there with the A1 shut in three places but the premier inn bar did @charltonnick and I proud.
Sunderland not as rundown as I remembered a fair few decent pre match boozers and the fans museum was good value as @clive will testify.
Onto the game, we were excellent first half, supporters and the team, should have been more than one up at the break and the home fans were not happy.
They made two changes shortly after that completely changed the game and put us on the back foot, injuries to both Solly and Pearce exposed our fragility amd empty bench and I suspect both Pratley and Taylor were not 100 matchfit, all of which contributed to such a painful ending as we just ran out of steam.
96 minute goals that lead to defeat have in the past ruined my weekend, but this time, not really, my expectations, along with the several hundred addicks who made the long journey for a lunchtime kick off were so low that we just sort of dealt with it.
We all know that this defeat was not down to the coaching staff or the players, not down to the protesters, boycotters or early bird season ticket holders, it was not down to the trust chairmans interviews, Jimmy Seeds grandson or any potential new owners, it was down to that miserable, misely bell end who sits in Belgium like a pathetic old man who takes pleasure in watching his garden dying because he refuses to water it.
Roland Ducatelet is a fucking twat, end of story and until he has left for good, things will not improve, as a prophet once told us
Not watching properly and have seen Lapslie before but is it just me that thinks he moves a bit like Scott Parker? Not afraid to put in a tackle either.
Have a better view of a game from behind the goal and it was so clear that we were making wrong passing decisions especially in the second half. The easy pass went missing and this started to put pressure on us defensively especially as we begun to get tired. On saying that, the team put in a shift we just need a few more experienced players to help calm things down
Phillips made one mistake and it cost us a goal. Other than, that I didn’t think he put a foot wrong. The sad thing is, as soon as they equalised, my first thought was that he’d get ruined on here. I guess that says more about the quality of people that get on here than it says about the quality of Dillon.
On hols and only just remembered it was first game of the season. We lost, no surprise. RD remains a complete nob and I am driving through Belgium in a couple of days. May set my kids on him as it will be about 7 hours into our homeward journey.

Oh do behave.
You are allowed to criticise an error.
Should it have been saved - Yes Was it goalie error - yes
Would we criticise a striker missing an easy chance - yes.
Should Dillon be exempt from criticism for his error- no
Did better than I expected nearly holding out for a point.
The game was lost on player availability when we needed fresh legs in the middle we had no options, none at all - can’t fault Bowyer today.
Good effort from the players to no avail. Lapslie May grow but not up to this division, we’re an injury (or a player sale) away from a very very tough season.
Ward, Dawkins & Ince.............should have been signed up this week & in the squad today. If LB isn't allowed to sign them then just say so & stop pissing them about.
I'll keep saying it - LB is an appeaser. If you can't be a manager under these circumstances then say so. Stop dicking about with "it is what it is".
Even by your standards you are talking complete shit.

Taylor had a bruised foot, but then ‘did his calf’ climbing down into the dugout a week or so ago. In the match he got stamped on, but is fine. Pearce really not happy about the tackle that may have injured him.
Yes we faded, but there were lots of positives from the game.
We need five or six new players at least though. Perhaps loan players have been approached, but new owners are needed to pay the wages, as Roland presumably won’t. As one of the players said today, Roland doesn’t have the best interests of the club at heart.
Disappointed with the 2nd half performance but also with Bowyer. Five subs? Where was Blumberg, Mascoll, Umerah and others? And when we were under the cosh, why not fresh legs?

Don’t talk rubbish, Phillips has played at least five games and a couple of friendlies-more than enough time to write off a player as not up to it. After all, Nicky Pope and Ben Amos (amongst a million others who got stick after a handful of games) turned out to be a load of shit didn’t they? And i’m sure those on here saying he isn’t good enough have seen every minute of Dillon’s appearances as well as all his youth team games....
Is it just me or has Lapslie got a bit of Scott Parker about him?
Wow !
That's just what Mr F said at one point in the first half !
I said this after the Brighton Friendly on the post match comments.
Reminds me of a very young Parker.
Such a shame he cant go away and be schooled like Parker was but instead will be under immense pressure in a small squad in a toxic atmosphere, no Kinsella about on the pitch to bring him through.
Sunderland fans cheered their 16 yo kid on with everything he done today, didn't groan, didnt moan when he made an error.
We moan about a keeper who made two great saves on his debut.

When did we as a fan base become so shit at nurturing young players? When did we develop this idea that they must always be the finished article as soon as they appear in the first team?
Part of being a good supporter of the team is to encourage and empower the players to perform. Doubly so when it comes to creating a supportive atmosphere that allows young players to play without fear. Too many of our fans are more interested in proving what a good judge of a player they are, though, by calling a young player’s whole career prospects after half a dozen appearances and then highlighting every error that player makes.
Most of you were on here a year ago writing Amos off after the Plymouth game, decrying the incredible injustice of him playing ahead of Phillips. All on the basis of a couple of errors in one match.
You were all wrong about that but a year later you still haven’t learnt and are now writing off Phillips, the very player you all wanted picked ahead of Amos a year ago. You’ll be the same bunch that were climbing all over Nick Pope before that... the same Nick Pope who is now considered one of the top keepers in the whole country.
You all carry on running down our youngsters though, even though the manager has literally no option but to pick them right now. I’m sure the swelling it gives you in your pants is well worth it.
Get used to conceding late goals this season. With such a small, young squad, and such limited options to switch tactics and personnel from the bench, we are inevitably going to tire and be vulnerable to the opposition making in game changes of their own. Players will also have to soldier on with knocks or when not 100% fit and that will be something teams will be able to take advantage off in the closing stages of games.
We need to be scoring 2 or 3 goals when we are on top in games because the circumstances in which the players are being forced to operate in makes individual errors all the more inevitable.

Can't agree with that. Their manager changed things at half time and second half they dominated the game. We were lucky to still be level as Sinclair somehow put a sitter wide from about 4 yards when it was easier to score.

Maybe good to change the ‘you’ to ‘some’ @Exiled_Addick as it appears you are generalising & accusing the majority of Charlton supporter base / whole of CL posters of digging out Amos, Pope, Hamer & now Philips. Not from me & loads others. it feels like being jabbed in the chest & being accused of something by an overly angry person. I do totally agree with your main point of being supportive of young players developing in the team. This season this is going to be more important than ever with the Duchatelet imposed shitfest.

Amos had a shocker on the opening game of last season and looked poor for the first few games. But as the season went on he grew in confidence and was one of our best players. If Phillips is to be our first choice keeper this season I'm sure he will improve the more he plays. I hope that the fans get behind him as this can only help him grow in confidence.
