Does Football have a gambling problem?

  • To be honest apart from Betway who I know sponsor West Ham as I saw a picture just now. I couldn’t tell you who sponsors who anymore.
I used to boycott certain companies due to their choice of team to sponsor but now I couldn’t tell you who sponsors who as I rarely  watch any other football other than Charlton
I couldn’t tell you who have sponsored anyone of our opponents to date so far  this season.

Our opponents so far this season have been sponsored by:

    PovertyWager
    WongaPLUS
    CDBU
    Winningz
    KiddieBet
    Shark Bailiffs
    Brokelads
  • Gillingham sponsored by Greggs for the manager

Never heard of any of them. I can guess what they do.

I'll be interested to know how many people on here and in the UK in general have ever used the betting companies on the front of a lot of the shirts.

    Hollywood Bets
    Spreadex Sports
    W88
    ManbetX
    SBOTOP
    Fun88
    Sportsbet.io
    Stake.com
    Betway

Are the 9 companies currently sponsoring Premier League teams that will be affected.

Of the lot, I think I've used Betway a couple of times, but the rest I haven't heard of save for being on the shirts
I have a feeling Asia is the target audience.
  • It's about time. I've always felt so uncomfortable seeing betting sponsors on football shirts and I hated it when we had Betdaq. If your sponsor is something you can't put on a child's shirt then they shouldn't be your sponsor.
There's also the fact that there's a clear link between gambling and the racist abuse players suffer online during and after matches. Not only is there a problem here, but players tend to get a lot of abuse from abroad when they do something that stops someone getting their win, and it's incredibly hard for us to police, meaning the it's on the social media companies, who do next to nothing. Obviously these companies will still advertise abroad and it won't stop abuse, but clubs making money off a system that funnels abuse towards their own players is crazy
  • Above all, gambling and fantasy football have ruined the online football discourse in ways I can only begin to express the soul-crushing banality of
  • (Charlton Life mostly steers clear of that, somehow, which is a blessing)
  • Sponsored links:

  • I bet this never happens

    Is there ?

Be interested to see that report.

    Can you link?
  • 100% yes. It goes hand in hand with sports.

It's like alcohol though, the vast majority can do it without any issues (I don't want to use the word "responsibly" as that really is inappropriate) but for those that it does effect, it consumes them.

    Are you serious??
  • I've been watching interviews of people who have serious gambling addictions.

It's very sad and it ruin lives.

I don't think it is a problem that is easy for anyone to understand. They cannot stop but are too ashamed to openly admit the problem while it's occurring.

There will always be counter arguments for everything but I do think the existance of gambling is more of a problem then a benefit for the world we live in.

Obviously,  the concept of it will never just vanish, but it could gradually get reduced. The money could be spent on better things. Not just filling up rich peoples pockets.

I used to spend a proportion of my wages on betting.

It all adds up. I probably overall chucked thousands away...and for what?

I'm personally pleased to say I now have no fixation on gambling. It no longer drags me in at all 🤷

I'm lucky that I used to lose on it quite often...so it made me give up early!

  • There has been time's I have watched our defense & thought they have got to be at it

  • An industry that profits on people who have natural brain disorders.

Perhaps there is a way to detect it and stop the problems before it erupts.

Probably a bit far fetched to give everyone who has a betting app on their phone an mri scan but someone might have the answers!
