Diamond Formation

  • When we start winning games comfortably & start scoring more than 2 goals every 4 games then I'll aplaud it. Until then, I'll stick to my wingers who hug the touchlines, put crossess in on the run to strikers who attack the ball in the box.
Worked out alright didn't it @golfaddick

We have yet to see Page and Osilaja /Matthews as FBs
  • I think its a load of old bollox imo. Players run & constantly change position. Its not netball where you can only go into certain areas. Just the same as zone marking doesn't work. Then again I'm old school - sunday football & jumpers for goalposts (thats because you can't be arsed lugging the posts half way over blackheath)

You may have something there, Golfie.

Reminds me of when my two first started playing for the local team at the age of 7. Mini football at that time with 7-a-side.

    They had two formations:

0-0-6 when attacking and 6-0-0 when defending - thankfully the keeper stayed in his goal (most of the time).

Also how many clubs in the top 3 divisions play a flat 4-4-2 with out and out wingers sprinting down the line and firing in crosses?

We play far more exciting football than any 4-4-2 Powell, Peeters and Luzon put out (our recent managers who regularly used it). Only Powell made it work consistently and that was in League 1.
Isnt 442 the staple diet of coaches like Hodgson and Sven-Goren?

Has it....??  Only game which we won 'comfortably' and scored more than twice was against Derby. Most other games we've won by the odd goal or drawn when we've scored twice (Fulham & WBA).

Not knocking what we've done but please do come back to me when we've......

    1) won comfortably

    And /or

    2) scored 3 or more goals.
Since Sept 2018 (When you expressed your doubts) we finished 3rd in league 1 and won the playoffs predominantly using that formation. In fact weren't a number of our last few games of the regular season 3-0 and 4-0 wins.

We have used the formation slightly less this year but it has been effective when used and was what we used when we had our best run at the start of the season.

    Yes - and Mike Bassett.

  • think the Diamond formation was first developed by Malcolm Allison.
Cant see Solly fitting into a wing back role - doesnt have the athleticism to do it.
  • This is another of Bowyer’s (plus Jacko plus Marshall) qualities. The diamond clearly was the right way forward last year when we were expected to dominate games. And when you dominate consistently, where’s the need to change?

This year we’ve adapted into all sorts of different formations to protect against opponents strengths but also exploit their weakness. And it’s worked a treat.

We are very lucky to have the team being run by such a tactically astute management team.
However, it needs a team of players who are capable of being able to adapt accordingly, of which they have dutifully assembled too.

Sorry.....didn't realise the thread was from last season & I replied thinking you were talking about this season.

I stand by my wingers comment......obviously happy with how things have gone since last Sept by I still think if wd are playing with wing backs (3 centre halves & rb & lb pushed further forward) then the lb & rb have to be able to put in decent crosses. Neither Solly nor Purrington can. Oshilaja is much better & put in some great crosses against Bristol City. Page I reckon would be better than Purrington, but hasn't stayed injury free for us to judge. Wiggins would have made a good wing back.
  • I think it is all about flexibility for Bowyer. He clearly demands that from the players he has and he seems to get more from them because of it.

If the whole team play badly: Cafc at Wigan 1st half and Derby for 90 mins at the valley it doesn't matter what formation you play.

The fact that we have changed formation during a match shows we have a manager that can think on his feet, and players with the Intelligence and abillity to carry it out.

There is nothing between the top 10 in the Championship so far, which means seeing potential weeknesses in your Opposition and exploiting it.

3-5-2 covers most scenarios because it becomes 5-3-2 when under the cosh.
Think Brentford and Leeds, which In the last 10 minutes  was 5-3-1-1.

Brentford was an incredible backs to the wall job. TBH, i was very impressed with Brentford and think they will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season, especially now they have found out where the goal is.
  • Agree Brentford's only weakness was they couldn't put one of their numerous chances in the net. Last few games they have started to finish off their superb passing.
Yes Brentford were  better than Leeds and Derby have been by far the weakest team so far at the Valley.

Best pure footballing team we have faced this season without a doubt. They way they moved the ball was incredible.

Couldn't finish there dinner though, and that's all that matters.

They were certainly very impressive, i hope they are there at the end of the season (unless we can be of course). Maybe both of us. But certainly a model and manager to keep an eye on for the future.
