John Lewis Advert

Anyone seen the John Lewis/Waitrose advert? It’s a take off if s school concert with the kids doing a hi/tech version of Bohemian Rhapsody. Brilliant I thought.

  • Tedious already.

Was ok the first time but because it doesn’t have that ‘Christmassy’ feel to it I find it more annoying than anything.
  • That's not their Christmas advert
  • Prefer the new Royal Marines one.
  • That's not their Christmas advert

I know. That’s my point. Their Christmas ads can become tiresome but at least they have that occasion to them. This doesn’t have the charm attached to it.
  • As someone who works on the creative side in the ad industry, I have to say, I just don't get it
  • I think it's amazing as it's got loads of robots in and I like robots. However I also don't get it, I have no idea what they're trying to get me to buy unless they've got a new range of robots
  • As someone who doesn't shop in John Lewis, I have to say, I just don't get it too.

  • Sir Elton’s fee for the Xmas advert is £5m.
    He gets it.

    Middle England vomit inducing stuff.

Their worst one was that one they did with Billy Joel’s always a woman song. The issue I have with these and all the fawning that goes on around them, particularly the Xmas ones, is that it’s not all the perfect picture they like to project in the real world.

I appreciate their adverts are no doubt done with their demographic in mind, but when I think of all the Xmas ones, I think how demoralising for single parents or people not on an income bracket to have what they project. Xmas can be a shit time of year for a lot of people for numerous reasons. Then we have everyone banging on about their advert

    Rant over

Its an advet fgs. No-one is forcing you to watch it. When it comes on simply switch channels.......there are literally hundreds to choose from nowdays. Not see it as that's what I do.
  • That's the worst one yet. Although I can't stand that song so that probably doesn't help.
  • Brilliant, imaginative and ultimately escapist piece of advertising .. as for the 'middle England' comment, that is the JL and Waitrose market .. selling dreams to a selected audience .. just as Ray Winstone does wiv 'is free sex five ads innit
  • Fuck me I'm sorry I posted it now! 😉
  • Overproduced, too polished and not particularly creative.
  • some absolute pearlers there!

Worked in the ad industry for 30 years and this is the way things have gone over the past 5 years. Creative Directors more interested in making a big budget "movie" like this than coming up with a clever idea that sells a product in an interesting way. There was a guy called John Webster who was a master at producing creative but effective ads, he did all these below. Total legend in the industry.

    Haha!
    “GERTCHA”
A real classic that I’d completely forgotten. Now I’ve seen it, I remember as a kid trying to work out who would say “Gertcha” next.
    Simple times!

  • Surely the advert is saying that all John Lewis and Waitrose people go the extra mile for their customers as they are partners in the business and not merely employees. I quite like it.

Now Volvo's 'Human made' adverts really are thought provoking, I particularly like 'chapter 5' in the series. Mind you I have plenty of time to worry about these things, now that the takeover has stalled.

Always loved that skinhead one. Shows you that there is always more than one way of looking at things.
  • Still laugh at the Specsavers "dead cat, with no pulse" ad every time I see it
  • I saw it for the first time yesterday and thought it was brilliant. Had no idea what was being advertised but it's made the impression for John Lewis that I guess they hoped for....
  • Still laugh at the Specsavers "dead cat, with no pulse" ad every time I see it

Whats even funnier is the fact that my Wife works in the Vet industry and got untold complaints from Client's after the ad was originally aired because they genuinely thought that's what happened at vet practices
  • I think it's really good !

That's exactly the problem with it, though - maybe it's a good creative idea (though personally thought it was pretty dreadful) but no link to the brand(s) at all - and I'm core JL/ Waitrose target market. From all the red in it, I thought it was going to be McDonalds or Virgin or Vodafone...

I work with the PR team at Specsavers, their ad storyboards are actually created in house. No need to spend hundreds of thousands on ad agencies.

Cannot believe there are ad agency types discussing and saying they don’t get it. Your all discussing it, that’s the point isn’t it?

That is exactly what I thought. If it gets you talking about the "product" you have a winner, surely?
