Scunthorpe United v Charlton Athletic
Tuesday 2nd October 2018 … 7:45pm Kick-Off
Referee: Darren Drysdale (Lincolnshire)

Introduction

It was always going to happen yet regardless Charlton have shown these last few days that they’ll be a tough side to beat. I am of course talking about our four game winning run, a team were always going to end it eventually, a trip to Luton saw to that… With the opposition undefeated at home this season, it looked as though Charlton would break that duck; Tariqe Fosu opening his account for the season, Luton would battle back to lead going into injury time and it would take an unlikely saviour in Chris Solly to notch a last minute winner.

Six game undefeated is not to be sniffed at and tomorrow night the players have a chance to extend that run even further… a trip up to Lincolnshire to face fellow Play-Off semi finalists: Scunthorpe United awaits

The Opposition
Name: Scunthorpe United | Manager: Stuart McCall
Ground: Glanford Park

From the last quarter of the season Charlton and Scunthorpe trod familiar paths… Both would lose their Managers (Scunthorpe sacking theirs) and both would replace with Assistant Managers making the step up – Each side would then reach the Play-Off Semi-Finals with their seasons ending at that stage and that’s where the similarities end.

For Charlton they’ve gone from strength to strength with Lee Bowyer being appointed on a permanent basis – For Scunthorpe their start to the season was poor, resulting in Nick Daws being replaced and the Chairman admitting it was a mistake of an appointment – Yet like Charlton; Scunthorpe have only lost two games this season (again one at home and one away). Incoming is the experienced Stuart McCall who is yet to lose since taking charge… the Irons are on a roll, these two clubs may well have mirroring seasons once more!!

Managers Comments: McCall has admitted that things will be freshened up when the Iron take on Charlton tomorrow… Despite a 0-0 draw with Burton on the weekend; McCall has admitted that he’ll be forced into make changes tomorrow night with Matthew Lund (Suspended) and Ike Ugbo (Hamstring) as two that’ll likely be missing from the Scunthorpe squad.

Charlton Team News
Likewise; Lee Bowyer was forced into making some changes for the match against Luton and hopefully one of those will return to the starting line up tomorrow night – Karlan Grant being the man to settle for a place on the bench having picked up a knock in training. Also missing was Jamie Ward who has also picked up a knock, the Northern Irish international could well be a doubt for tomorrow night too

Returning to the bench for Luton was Darren Pratley, and with Ben Reeves struggling at one stage with his back on Saturday there could be a straight swap in the midfield, Bowyer will no doubt look to protect his defence against what’ll be a stern test and will surely look to add some fresh legs to the middle of the park

Substitutes Bench: Phillips | Dijksteel | Lapslie | Reeves | Vetokele | Ajose | Marshall

Prediction
Of course everyone wants to keep a winning run going yet away games against Luton and Scunthorpe would always be a tough ask… Four points from the two would be a good return yet with a draw on Saturday it means the win tomorrow will be needed more and so avoid the top five from getting away again. Getting three points wont be easy though as Charlton have yet to win at Glanford Park in four meetings with the last win coming in 1973.

  • another tough game .. some of our immediate top six rivals have tough ones as well, Posh at Sunderland, Pompey at Coventry, Doncaster at Accrington .. a win could see us gain more ground on the top slots .. BUT a point will still do quite nicely .. I like the idea of having a 'tough guy' Pratley in midfield .. I'll cop out and go for a draw

  • Comfortable away win 4-0.
  • A banker for over 2.5 goals this, they’ve had some high scoring games and we know bowyer will go with 2 up top as always. Be interesting to see the side he puts out, was Dijksteel gonna start until Solly saved the day Saturday?! Maybe even Lapslie or Vetokele could start we shall see, I think we will have enough to win.

    1-3

  • 1 - 1 Draw , Grant for us .
  • Tough one to call. Like us they have only lost two games. Scunny don't seem to have trouble scoring and they haven't lost for 5 matches. All in all a score draw would not be unwelcome although two such results on the spin are rare-ish. I'll take a chance and go for a sneaky win - but as per usual can't see us keeping a clean sheet.
  • 2.1 Charlton
    Our run continues.
  • Judging by the shift put in by the players on Saturday I think tiredness may be a factor.
A clean sheet would be nice.

Hope not, I want to see a bit of creativity from midfield. One of those at a push but not both.
