Stand up to Cancer

Spent most of my Friday night watching this. Some light relief through some terribly sad stories. What some poor families go through, just doesn’t bare thinking about.

So if you can spare some change, please do.

Stand up.

  • came in from the pub, wife had it on. tried to firm it out but ended up grizzling like a newborn. Take my money, horrible but worthy event
  • Will be donating tomorrow. As you say what some families have been through is heartbreaking. Horrible disease. Hopefully one day a cure will be found.

The little girl who found out she had cancer at age 3 and died at 11 had me feeling like I needed to curl up in a ball and cry... I didn't fancy curling up in a ball in front of the missus. So I just cried it out and then paid them some money.
  • Not had a good week, first a water leak under my kitchen concrete floor. Then the passing of Bob my cocker spaniel and yesterday was my dad's 28th anniversary of losing him to cancer. Couldn't face watching it live, so watched it on catch up and fast forwarded it through the sad bits.

It's a great cause and I will continue to donate to funding cancer research.

Although I feel very uncomfortable watching Gary Lineker going full on emotion porn, if he paid his tax maybe the NHS would be better funded and th government would have more research money.

Stupid and unnecessary thing to say not least because he does pay his tax.

Trolling about cancer, how low can you go.
  • Watched it. Donated. Very stressing as I’ve just found out my sister has stage 3 breast cancer. We all live in hope.

Very sorry to hear that Steve. Please pass on my best wishes. My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of years ago. It’s a bastard but they can do wonders these days.

It might be a silly thing to say but I think a quick search of the Internet will show you Gary Lineker is anything but a paragon of virtue when it comes to his tax affairs.

  • It sounds pathetic I know, but I can't bring myself to watch programmes like this anymore.
Like many of us I have experienced the devastating effects of cancer close up and as I approach old age I grow ever more mindful that at some point I may face the same challenge.
I have grown dubious over the years that they will ever find a "cure".
Its not like its a virus or bacteria.
If I understand it correctly its an organic cell mutation that grows independently of the body's natural defences and controls.
I saw a programme once where an eminent scientist said that if we all lived long enough we would all get cancer eventually.
Like a natural consequence of living. The Russian roulette of living.
Funding and research will hopefully lead to better understanding and treatments, that may hopefully prolong life, ease pain and I hope improve the quality of life of sufferers.
Especially childhood cancers, those poor innocent victims that have barely even begun their lives.
Its worth my money for that alone.
I'll continue to donate whatever I can, but I can't bring myself to watch the TV shows.
  • Earlier this century the rates were 1 in 10, in the 90s when I was at school it was 1in 5, now days its 1 in 2.

Its all well and good trying to find 'cures' but the modern life style and food methods have a lot to answer for.

Big love to all those currently suffering or caring for loved ones, my mum has stage 4 cancer in her stomach and today has her 8th chemo before an op mid november.

I give plenty of money to cancer research. I raised over £1000 last year alone.

That was the one that got me - absolutely gut wrenching.

Well done for your charity work but I just dont get why you or anyone else would feel the need to dig out Lineker in the slightest.

I'm fairly sure that Lineker has raised thousands over the years for Leukemia Research and pretty sure he was patron of a Leukemia charity for a considerable period of time.

I'm also confident he pays a shit load more in tax than 99.9% (if not 100%) of us all on this forum.

No way could we have watched the programme last night. Still far too soon since the death of my FIL from a brain tumour.

Also, want to mention one of my old Spurs mates from SIMB and Spursweb Cokes who is currently fighting his own battle in his own special way.

Tend to agree with this. I’m very rarely god and the almighty about anything but I do have a theory that cancer is a kind of natural disaster hence why it is very difficult to stop the increase.
And the reason for its abundance imo is the human race is increasingly becoming a cancer to the earth it resides on.
Cancer is gods eye for an eye.

I was thinking more along the line of plastics and sugar
  • Good luck to your Mum Shine and sister Acab. And to everyone fighting their fights.

The 1 in 2 figure is scary. But amazing things can be done.

Thanks, she's absolutely nailing it, 6/7 chemo days down with the ice cap and she's smashing it.. managed to keep her hair too, which was a massive worry for her.
  • Thanks Al

@Acab Doing fine now thanks Steve. John and Jeanette both well and became grandparents themselves in the last year. They live down near Sittingourne.

I agree on some modern lifestyles, obesity etc having an effect but it's also due to advancements in other areas meaning live longer and get cancer in later life.

There's also other side of the less modern lifestyles of say, the smoking in the 60s and 70s, now having an effect years later.

Sadly some are just horrifically unlucky.
