Bill Slater and Charlton "amateur" players

Sad to learn of the death of Bill Slater, a Wolves regular and often captain during their most successful decade in the 1950s.

Slater won three league titles and also lifted the FA Cup in 1960.

Slater, who earned 12 England caps, remains the last amateur to play in an FA Cup final - for Blackpool in 1951.

He is also the only part-time player to be named Footballer of the Year.

Which "amateur" players have made the Charlton first team? Hans Jeppson was probably the mot influential. I remember Dennis Edwards initially playing for us as an amateur as did Mick Stewart. Did Peter Laraman play for us as an amateur?

Celebrated "amateurs" I remember for other teams were the Mortimer brothers (John and Charlie) for Woking and Chelsea, George Robb for Spurs, Miles Spector for Chelsea, and Pilot Officer Warren Bradley for Manchester United. A parallel career in cricket or the armed forces were often reasons for so-called "amateur" status.

The late Tony Pawson, journalist and amateur Kent county cricketer, played a couple of matches successfully in the old first division at the instigation of Jimmy Seed.

EDIT: He was also World Fly fishing champion in 1984.
