It was funny. But the poof jokes mostly consisted of him shouting "poofter! " at Melvin Hayes although beautifully undermined by his homoerotic obsession with one of the characters. I think the biggest objection would be Michael Bates blacking up as a Sikh...

Not just aimed at Melvin Hayes: "You is a load of poofs" was quite a common line.
I have the box set unopened at the moment. Maybe time to watch it.
