Lovely Bohemian place over the road from the Cush, Black Dog great for ale, Duke good for food and a venue, Royal Naval Reserve has fresh fish caught every morning, good as you will get. Can't argue with Wheelers, Quayside now going the food route too. Sportsman and Jo Jo's lovely, High Street and Oxford Street bit spoilt for choice. And if you're staying over, Mr Beano's cafe by Chestfield Station is the perfect place for stodge. Love the place, holiday venue, family adjacent, just pleasant.
I’ve genuinely never noticed it yet must have walked past it loads of times.
Its a Wetherspoons so using the posh name for it doesn't hide the fact you have to order your food at the bar and give a table number. Fine dining it aint.
I know you will all be thrilled to hear that I have secured a booking at Wheelers. :-)
One genuinely useful bit of info, maybe. It's cash only. Glad I asked, I wasn't expecting that.
It's a real quaint little place @PragueAddick that hasn't moved on with all that modern technical stuff. Don't be alarmed when you get there if it looks like a fish shop with a couple of tables and chairs in a little room behind because although that is exactly what it looks like, the food is absolutely fantastic and that is why it is so popular. You do know it's bring your own booze don't you? I think its been mentioned on here. You can drop some wine off earlier and they will refrigerate it for you. The people are lovely and the place is a little gem. I hope you and Jo have a lovely time.

Yes, I got that feel from the conversation when I called up to reserve. The lady seemed mildly surprised that I was calling and then was searching for her "books" "Did you take the books? - oh no, silly me, I had them all the time". Sounds great, and great that such a small place can build a such a reputation.
I know about the wine, but I'm only going to need a half bottle, since I fall off the wagon previous evening and then we plan to interrogate your beer offer in the evening. Jo's driving, she's gotta new mot-aa :-)
In the good old expense account days wasn't there a chain of fish restaurants in London called Wheelers? When you first mentioned the name, that's what came to mind.
Yes, there was a well established London based Wheelers fish restaurant chain. Think they specialised in Oysters funnily enough.....there was one in Soho, just off Shaftesbury Avenue. Might still be there actually? Just checked and yes, it’s still there in Old Compton Street and it’s described as an Oyster Bar.

Obviously downloaded that off the internet. There is simply no way you could have travelled there today from Eltham, not in these treacherous conditions.
Have just booked an Airbnb for a few days with the family, which includes my two sons aged 12 and 15. The adults going all love fish and would be happy with any of the restaurants recommended on here but are there any suggestions for restaurants that do good fish as well as dishes that might interest the kids a bit more?
For some reason photos of the food didnt upload. Anyway... excellent. Whitstable native oysters are big plump things but they are what they are, regardless of the restaurant. Sister and I had fresh whole lobster with a garlic sauce dressing, niece had zander fillet from the menu. All great. Delicious home made bread and Guiness butter. Tiny little place that reeks of the coast. Terrific stuff to take away from the shop in the front. Book well ahead, people were there to take our table at 15.00.
Oh, price. Three people Two courses , two bottled water, one tea £102 Service on top. They let you bring your own booze, got a Chablis Premier Cru from M&S for £21, perfect accompaniment. Just a shame about the utterly foul weather, we didnt hang around. But felt like a special day out, thanks for all the reccos.
Nice one PA, and yes it was a shame about the weather. We go to Whitstable a lot and I often walk back from the beach to get us a couple of take away crab sandwiches on brown bread from Wheelers.
I'm going to take advantage of being able to get a direct train to Whitstable from Woolwich over the summer months and we are heading down on Sunday. Just inc ase people didnt realise you can do that. Takes 90 mins.
I think i'm going to go to Crab and Winkle under Soundas recommendation. And due to lack of too much time to go further out.
My sister also says there is a pub with live music on sundays. Does anyone know which one she is referring to? Or are there many?

Native oysters to start for me, even though many starters look delicious. Main course?
I hope you have cash reading the bit at the bottom?
