  • The article raised a chuckle around a serious subject. It wasn't laugh out loud funny, which is just as well as I fell over last week and laughing now hurts.

I'm surprised that Millwall haven't condemned the racist chanting. As a club they have done a lot of work against racism at community level - so why the tolerance for it? If it happened at Charlton, we'd expect the club to ban anyone identified as doing it. Even Chelsea are sending some of their racist fans on courses to understand why its wrong.

Romesh must've, completely innocently of course, missed this:

    https://www.millwallfc.co.uk/news/2019/january/club-statement/

The suggestion that the club is tolerating such abhorrent behaviour is, at best, complete fabrication.

As an aside, I can take or leave Romesh. Nowhere near the best comedian on the circuit but also nowhere near as unfunny as Paul Chowdhry.

To be a fly on the wall during that course. It would be comedy gold.
  • I put him in the category of “comedians” that I don’t find funny because of their limited material, although I liked his sitcom The Reluctant Landlord, I love Ricky Gervais’ tv stuff but don’t like his stand up stuff.

Alan Carr - I’m gay don’t you know
Jo Brand - I’m a woman, I’m fat and have periods, all men are bastards
Sarah Millican - I’m fat and like cake
    Paul Chowdry - I’m Asian
    Patrick Kielty - I’m Irish
    Gina Yashere - I’m black
    Reginald D Hunter - I’m black

    Interesting choices.

Do you dislike any British white straight male comedians?

Just in the name of balance, like?

I know it wasn't aimed at me but I could give you a very long list due to the abundance of generic, unfunny comics out there. Here are four that come close to the top of my list. All far less funny than Romesh:

    Josh Widdicombe
    Russell Howard
    Frank Skinner
    Noel Fielding

I am aware that I am now assuming their sexualities, whiteness and country of allegiance

I know it’s all about opinions but I’ve seen Frank Skinner live as well as lots of other “top” comics and he is amongst the very best.

You're right, it's absolutely about opinions.

Some of my favourites are either dead or have taken a back seat in recent times.

Richard Pryor, Dave Allen, Patrice O'Neal and Bob Monkhouse are the obvious ones.

A special mention goes to Dave Chappelle. Can't wait for him to fully get back on the circuit.

Of those still performing I think you're hard pushed to find better than Bill Burr, Jim Jeffries, Corey Holcomb and Tom Segura. They won't be everyone's cup of tea, though.
  • The problem for Romesh Ranganathan is he's in a similar position to Gary Neville and management ?  sister Tracey and brother Phil are ahead of Gary in Being successful.

Not saying Romesh isn't funny but his Mother and Uncle are ahead of him for laughs.

Yes because you need diversity in the things you like/dislike or waycist.

There’s  at least two white British people in that list, and as your asking, Russel howard, jason manford funny as a hangover
  • Loathe to agree with a Millwall oik but Big_Bad_World is right. Bill Burr is funny AF.

Check out Patrice O'Neal. In the top 3 best ever in my eyes. Sadly no longer with us.

  • @Big_Bad_World - on your recommendation I scooted over to YouTube and watched a bit of Patrice O’Neal...cheers mate, seen enough to know what I’m doing with my day off tomorrow.

Watch 'Elephant In the Room'. You're very much welcome.

Patrice O'Neal was a genius. He literally did not give a fuck about his 'career' either. He lost so many gigs and opportunities cos he didn't care. Man was just straight up funny. Scene stealer in The Office and Arrested Development - but his stand-up was bordering on genius

Perfect summary. I'm gutted that I never got to see him live.

  • I think Frank Skinner is one of the quickest thinking comics around. I once was in the audience for fantasy football, and whilst David Badiel was as funny as penile warts, Frank kept the audience laughing and was genuinly approachable and witty.
  • Frank Skinner is one of the sharpest and wittiest comedians I've ever seen. Really unappreciated stand up comedian he is

If it if it was not for racism he wouldn't have an act. It seems to be the only thing he goes on about.
Seems like we’re in the minority.

He has three angles... the stereotypical pushy Asian mum, a lazy eye and self deprecation.

His shows are directed to within an inch of their life and completely dull.
    But you still watch them
I watch a League of their Own. My wife watches Just Another Immigrant whilst I stick hot pins in my eyes.

And he manages to speak about things that mean stuff to him and about him, whereas you just use those things to judge him, his mum, his disability and his race, you sir sound like you must have loads going for you to judge a lesser person........but then some people (yep you) are just knobs and wouldnt dare say anything like this to his face.
LOL. Where to start with this.

    1. I haven’t judged him. I’ve judged his comedy and the material he uses. To me It’s not funny. I don’t know him or what’s important to him. I couldn’t care less about his race, mum or eye. Which is probably why I don’t find him funny.

    2. If in some bizarre parallel universe he said ‘hey, Rob, do you like my comedy?’ I would absolutely tell him I don’t. I’m sure he’s had harsher critics than me and I doubt he’d care.

    3. You’re getting upset about me judging someone as a person, yet you’ve called me a knob based on my opinion. Is that not judging someone? Or are you deliberately being hypocritical?

I’ll leave it there. You already embarrassed yourself without me adding to it.
I imagine you probably *could* care less about his "race, mum or eye".
In the sense that I’ve allowed myself to get dragged into an argument about it on a Saturday evening, you’re absolutely right.

In any other sense - you’re absolutely wrong.
In the sense that you're literally the only person to bring up his "race, mum or eye" anywhere on this thread, or anywhere else, I'd say that any suggestion that you couldn't care less about these things is absolutely wrong.  Whatever day of the week it is.
Is this the modern day equivalent of "Snog, Marry, Avoid?"

I can recommend Pornhub. Start with it, you'll have plenty of time left over to watch comedians.

One of the best standups I've seen and very clever material.

I find most modern standups incredibly bland - maybe just an age thing.

Jerry Sadowitz is the most offensive/daring comedian I've seen - seemed happy to have a pop at everyone including himself and to destroy his career in the process.

My pet hates at present are Shappi Khorsandi and Nish Kumar who to me are utterly useless and devoid of any comic takent. There have been comics in the past I've disliked on the basis of their material but at least I could see they had talent.

Patrick Kielty is certainly No1 for being smug.
  • Comedy is v.subjective, but I find him very unfunny
  • Patrick Kielty is certainly No1 for being smug.
He is married to Cat Deeley.
