Have to admit though I find a few of their comments bemusing about the pitch invasion
I'd be shocked if any of us think we're promoted and was the reason for doing it
I would be surprised if there arent more people like me who didnt even think we'd reach Wembley after the summer / start of the season we had and that the pitch invasion was nothing more than a season of emotion that just exploded to the surface with that crazy game last night - Certainly think that anyone is deluding themselves if they think we only need to turn up next Sunday
If they had spent 3 seasons in league one with a twunt of an owner and hadn’t appeared at Wembley since 1998 im sure it would have meant as much to them ... everyone was celebrating an amazing win that gives a Wembley visit and chance of promotion if we’d won last night 3-0 there would have been no pitch invasion and bouncing around , well minimal at least
They amaze me. Got a bloke at work who supports Sunderland and he has moaned all season about how shit they are and it’s all doom and gloom. All of a sudden after the Portsmouth game you would think they are the best team in the world.

You do know he’s going to be insufferable if they win don’t you mate

The good news is he has handed his notice in....so won’t have to suffer him much longer. If it does go wrong, I’ve got us some black bags, bricks and some chicken wire - we can just sling him in the water near work.
Remember a game with them around the mid 70's...on The Big Match....a load of their fans came and stood by us on the old east terrace close to where the south bank was..no trouble just some 'friendly' banter.

I came down to the 77/78 game from uni with a car load of Sunderland supporters and stood with them on the South Terrace. I watched the game on the South Terrace surrounded by hundreds of them. Everyone of them took the piss out of me but they were unfailingly friendly despite the fact we won with a late Mike Flanagan goal.
Good people and proper fans the Mackems, known a few over the years and all have always been decent lads. Coming out of Wembley in 98 all I spoke to were all very sportingly humble. Hopefully a repeat in a few days time.
Drank in a Streatham pub with a load of them in 1998 when I was a very larey drunk, they were all fantastic and we continued on to a curry and an after curry drinking session (that would kill me these days). They were all fantastic and I have had a very soft sport for the team and the area since.
We took the piss out of each other throughout the game (and at times I was over the top) but they were fab with me. Ideally this season I would have liked us both to go up.
Did a Masters at Durham in 98 and was wandering around Waterstones there a few months after the play off looking at sports books. One was a Sunderland fan’s diary of the season entitled ‘And Gray steps up ......’ :-)
One of dads in my eldest sons footy team told me he’s been to Wembley 3 times with Sunderland and seen them lose all 3 .... so he’s not going to this one to try and change their luck

Sure that'll make all the difference.
It will to him as he will have saved the money he will have wasted on seeing them lose at Wembley again.
It is true, I was probably over confident prior to that performance. We all know what we are capable of - the thing is that is now both the good and the bad.
I imagine it's the match up that Clive Mendonca was dreading! In his ideal world, we would have been 1 and 2 in the division, fighting over the title, and instead we're scrapping over one promotion place...

Back in the 90s when I regularly travelled down to Upton Park and then the Valley I encountered Sunderland fans on my train journeys down to London and I have to say they were always spot on, giving me much respect (and a few beers) for my travels to support the Addicks. They were so much more classy than the arrogant Toon Army who always thought too much of themselves. At our last visit to Roker Park I was signed into a working men’s club and bought beers after asking directions to the ground. Proper supporters and I’m glad we’re sharing Sunday with them rather than Pompey.

Just the once though.

I can assure everybody though that they are hanging on our every word!
so he’s not going to this one to try and change their luck
