What was the capacity of the old east stand at The Valley?

To settle an argument with a City fan, he thinks the Kippax at Maine Road was bigger with a capacity of 35,000, I thought the east stand held 40,000 plus? Great win yesterday, congratulations.

    PS thanks

PPS arguing with yourself is the first sign of madness
  • The figure of 45000 was commonly used.....incidentally it wasn’t a stand it was an open terrace....biggest in the country for quite a while.

East Terrace at its peak probably did hold around 40K although the South Terrace (where the Jimmy Seed is now) was pretty large too before they built the Tower Block Charlton House or whatever it's called.

75,031 was an 'official' attendance. Those that were there, sadly no longer with us, strongly maintained there were even more actually present that day.
  • Thanks all :)
  • "Following the stand extension, the police set a new capacity figure in December 1950 of 73,500. This comprised of 26,000 behind the south goal at one shilling and threepence, 32,000 on the East Terrace at one and six, and 12,600 behind the north goal and on the terracing adjacent to the stand at two shillings, plus the 2,900 seats. Subsequently the limit fell to 67,000..."
