Northern Soul

ive just been watching and Listening to Northern Soul. The music is great but the dancing is woeful and they look sober. Has anybody here been shuffling their feet to a Northern Soul disco?

Yes just the once, trouble is my 'southern' soul Dad's
moves didn't go down too well. I knew it was going to be different when most of the lads had hand towels hanging from their belts and started sprinkling talcum powder of the dance floor 😉.
  • Here's my favourite. Can't imaging dancing to it though.

  • A good night, been going for over two years now.
  • Yep, love a bit of northern, me :)

    Now, where's me talc......
  • Have a look at the video for Love me Again by John Newman.
Great NS dancing in it and a brilliant ending.
  • She was driving the mini.
  • I really, really want to like it. But it just doesn't work for me, after about three records I want to hear something with a bit of "balls".

The soul and rockabilly collectors are very similar creatures, indeed there are now occasionally clubs where they mix the two. The main difference is on our scene there are lots of live acts, and the original artists are bought over from the USA for shows (though obviously they are now few in number due to the march of time). The soul crowd just listen/dance to records and have no interest in live music. My mate promotes an increasingly popular weekender here in Albufeira for those that do like this kind of thing.

We have a pretty good Northern Soul scene here in Hastings I do like the music (we have one particular night every couple of months where several DJ's play their particular type of music...ie Ska, Reggae & Northern Soul) but not really into the dancing...happy to watch others.  We also have Wendy May doing regular afternoons/nights in various venues....she was a well known London DJ in the 80's now lives locally.
  • Yes - I know of Wendy May.

  • the one record i tried to buy a few years back on Ebay was Ellie Greenwich's 'You Don't Know' but unfortunately on the A side of the single is a Northern soul classic 'Baby' which made it ridiculously expensive as i was competing with a Northern Soul collector.

Ellie Greenwich - You dont know

Ellie, the goil from Noo Yoik .. she and Jeff Barry co-wrote so many what are now regarded as classic pop and 'soul' songs and anthems .. worth checking them out on her wiki profile.

I used to go to the 100 Club allnighters.....started at 1am and went onto 7am...yellows and blues were the order of the day, after 3-4 pints in the pub before hand.
  • Great song, great dancing, dodgy northern clobber

That clip & clobber is from 1977, it more or less died out in the 80s (the clobber not Northern) however in the last 15 years or so a lot of people who are into fancy dress have appeared / re-surfaced. All very sad though a touch amusing watching lots of fat 60 year olds stepping from side to side like a dad at a wedding wearing their Northern Soul outfit.
  • Still dads dancing to good sounds.
