Just about to renew mine, does anyone on here work in insurance and think they could help me out??

  • Didn't realise people still did this? Not if you read the papers......
  • could try using moneysupermarket.com to compare the offers for you in one go

If you do do that do not apply for the insurance through the site. Find the best deal then ring up the insurance company directly, you'll get it cheaper
  • Already done that mate, and money supermarket.com robbing bastards Admiral are. I got 3 points last November and they are saying because of that my premium has more than doubled from £473 to £1078!!!! I wouldn't mind but I've got full no claims, had 6 points on my licence when they first insured me and the fucking thing lives in the garage overnight now when it was left on the road before!!!

Halifax have given me a more sensible price now I was seeing if anyone could get discounts of 35-40% on here.

Are you going to the drink up tonight?
  • Try confused.com

I did mine through here and despite having come off a ban 2 years ago I got mine cheap as
  • i'll be there mate.
  • I've got six points and infinitie no-claims - got a good deal with Budget I think
  • Confused.com were my first port of call, just had a call back from a manager at Admiral. Twat. Halifax have given me a sensible price which is cheaper than last years premium, I get irate every year roundabout this time as it dawns on me how much car insurance is a total con.

DJDD that's why people don't bother with car insurance, same as anything mate. The honest people get bent over, and minus lubrication violently penetrated
  • I used to work in car insurance with elephant.co.uk which is part of the admiral group. They are pretty harsh when it comes to upping the price of your insurance when you get points, the amount of times i got ranted and raved at doesn't bear thinking about. When you had your car outside is it at the same address in a garage?
  • No, different address but possibly nicer area I live in now.

I wouldn't mind if it was a nice car though but it's a 9 year old Ford!!

  • They do take the area you live into consideration,i.e the number of thefts but they also use the number of accidents in the area.So you may never have a car related crime but due to the fact everybody drives like numptys and has accidents it's classed as a bigger risk area and up goes your premium!
  • Question for any lifers working in insurance:
I just had my renewal offer through. My premium last year was £780 for the year on a 1.4 turbo, 2015 Corsa. I had an SP30 violation in 2019 and a no fault claim in 2018 and I’m in my early 30s and held full license for 11 years.
My renewal offer…is £1250! This seems like a disgustingly high increase does it not?
  • Probably just hoping that you accept what you're being offered

If you give them a call, and play the usual pissing games, you'll suddenly find yourself given the proper offer.

I had a similar situation last month and as FA says, they are relying on you being too lazy to not do anything about it. So you have to shop around. That said, insurance is way higher than I expected generally.

I took a discount deal with one of those little boxes that you drive around with that judges your driving. It was horrific for a week, so many angry people behind me because I was doing the precise speed limit. Still, the box went wrong, I got in an argument with Aviva, and they eventually took the box away and kept the discount!

Rates are up, but that seems a very high increase if nothing else has changed. That said all insurers have been adjusting their pricing due to the removal of being able to offer new business customers a better rate than existing customers. Everyone assumed it would be good news - but not if you were someone who shopped around. It's likely that the £1,250 is they book rate for your profile/car etc. Do some online quotes and assuming the come out cheaper give them a call to see if they'll match.
  • My premium went up when I went from being a civil servant to a self employed printer even though I confirmed I would not be using the car in question for work. Apparently, printers are worse drivers than civil servants which was what I was basically told! I found it funny to be honest. I suppose it shows how stats driven it all is more than anything else.

  • A few thoughts -

A big increase can just be them taking the proverbial and hoping you won't shop around, or it can be a polite way of saying they don't want your business any more (declining cover would be held against you by other insurers so they tend not to do that unless you do anything really outrageous.)

May be worth trying a traditional broker (there's less around than there used to be but think they still exist even if they aren't on the high street these days.)  The online comparison sites tend to concentrate on the very basic market.   it's a good few years since i've bought a car magazine, but there always used to be adverts for brokers that specialise in people that mainstream insurers aren't keen on (e.g. endorsements, young drivers, non standard cars and so on.)
  • This is making me feel sick reading this back

I began my journey of being banged by insurance companies way back in 1999.

"It will go down when you are 21, then 25 then 30"

Granted I didnt help myself for years by either owning unsuitable cars, racking up points or just being young. Got rid of the more fun cars and eventually the points but every year the pricks try it on, think I'm up to 19 years no claims and they still email me with an increased premium, I do a rudimentary search with all the comparison sites, phone my own piss takers back, sit on hold for fucking ages, speak to some wombat who speaks to their dick of a manager who bleat and give me a price, less than the renewal, but higher than the previous year, I tell them to jog on, they then miraculously reduce the premium to less than the previous year, I pay and wait another year to do it all over again

Did mine on 1st April and it went down from £378 to £328 without me calling up or anything. I think the new law came in that said companies have to offer an existing customer the same price as a new customer, with same credentials.  This was brought in to stop, them just hiking up existing customers in the hope they will just pay.

Mine went down last year as well. Had used Direct Line for years and the premium suddenly shot up for no apparent reason about 3 years ago (had no points or claims). Jogged them on and went with Admiral.

  • I used to have a Mercedes CLK. 10 years ago I moved four miles in Sheffield to where 8 live now. Both in the city. The insurance jumped from £170 to £800+.
Many companies refused to even quote, do I put it on classic car insurance (only 12 Yr old car) . The insurers said that my address is the 12th most expensive postcode in the whole of the UK, citing Benefit Street (Birmingham) a few in Bradford and a couple in London ahead of me. The problem was more to do with the number of claims for personal injury as opposed to thefts.

Wife had her renewal from Churchill last week. Went up £1.00 to £218. Confused site were at least £40-50 for the cheapest.

Over 50, basic 1.1 Peugeot, many years no claims, 8k a year, blah blah.

Seems that straight renewal may now be cheapest.
