So, can we keep it up?

edited September 2019 in General Charlton
Combine the Forest first half with today's second half, and we'd probably give Solskjaer's Man U a run for their money.

Then again, we've started strongly before under Curbs, Parky and even Peeters and fallen away as injuries etc kick in or the oppo suss us out.

Which will it be?

Am I allowed to say I at least feel confident we'll stay up?

  • S'pose it's to be expected if I post with that heading in the early hours.  @golfaddick never disappoints 🤣

    .
  • Why not,in the past injuries have weakened the team ,we now have a strong squad, and even have the luxury of resting players.i look at some of the championship games on tv and really there is nothing to be afraid of,and,I still think the best is yet to come.
  • Unlike previous seasons there's every reason to be optimistic. We're going to hit on a rough patch somewhere along the line, and how we recover from that will be key.

The one thing I've learned this last month - it's unlikely we'll be in real danger of relegation.
  • January is a danger if Cullen, Field, Gallagher and Leko arerecalled.
Cullen i think will almost certainly go so that West ham can get a decent fee for him before his contract runs out.

Field and Leko it depends on how well us and West brom are doing. If we're still above them in January and both are playing regularly for us, they'll look a bit silly if they let us keep 2 of their players.

Gallagher - no way will he go back. Chelsea will let him stay here all season. Next year i guess he'll get a loan to a lower half premier league club.

But remember we still have Kayal to come in, and if any of the loan players leave i'm quite sure that Charlton/Bowyer/Gallen have a good enough reputation to at least get comparable replacements.
  • I can see Championship clubs bidding for Cullen. Hopefully West Ham extend his contract based on his performances with us. Agree, if we are seen as promotion rivals, West Brom will recall their two. Gallagher will definitely stay - Chelsea will be delighted with his progress.
  • Probably not, but I'm determined just to enjoy the moment for now. Especially as we get an extra week up at the top due to the internationals break!
  • No I can't see us keeping this up - happy if we get top ten. Just enjoying the fact that we are competitive.

  • As someone once said, it is what it is.
  • Not expecting to.  Still looking at survival and staying in the league but who knows; I predicted 2 points in August, so certainly not me!

  • Of course we could keep it going. Interesting though Forest (10th position) are the highest placed team we have played as it stands currently.

I think the jury is still out for the moment.  The positive though, we are certainly not relegation fodder as we expected at the start.

  • Nope, we are too efficient according to XG...

In all seriousness, every week I expect it to end and every week it carries on. Logic and stats say no, but who cares this is just awesome to witness.

    Come on you reds!
  • we now have a very decent squad, thanks to some very shrewd loan signings (on who we are very dependant, perhaps too dependant ?) .. we have an overnight stunning success as a manager .. we have great morale and team spirit .. no reason why 'it' can't last for a long time, except if our loanees are recalled by their home clubs
  • Keep looking at this thread title for tips.... so disappointing!
  • I'm more worried about the relegation fog fight next year in the premier league
  • Just enjoy it, after all the shit we’ve watched over the last 15 years, plus the last 5

its not gonna last forever but for the time being I don’t care

Agreed. Looking at the fixture list before the season, it looked like we had been given a relatively easy set of fixtures to start the season with. I never expected 14 points, but thought we could at least pick up a few points and not be humiliated.

Starting with Leeds we have a much tougher run of games, and after that I expect us to be lower down the table. If however we are still top 6 after playing Leeds, Swansea, Fulham, Derby, Brizzle and WBA then we do have genuine chance of promotion.

Turning into the 2011/12 season under Powell

Went right through to October before losing (fluke goal at Stevenage) yet every game prior I just felt it would be the one that we'd end up losing
  • The recall of Leko and Field are a risk in Jan. if both we and WBA are still up there West Brom may seek to gain some advantage by withdrawing these two.
  • Sadly I can't see beyond a 5-0 defeat.

    Sorry, wrong thread.

I reckon Leko will stay; Field might be recalled as the West Brom fans really like him and didnt want him going out on loan in the first place
  • We got our plucky 'ol Charlton back.

So refreshing to see the team constantly play above itself, mostly over-matched on resources but making up for it on spirit and hard work. Polishing rough diamonds and seeing them progress is far more fun to watch than steamrolling under-matched opponents. And anything is better than Division 3!

So similar to the way we used to grind out results under Curbs

Dont think we will trouble play offs but 10-14th would be a great season.

Enjoy it, its most welcome to know effort and application is a given under LB

    Yeah ....... Charlton!

  • Up until January. Yes I feel we can. It then depends on the loanees and of course Taylor. For me Cullen is the most important loanee. Maybe Field also. I think he might improve a lot into another key player. Will West From  allow him to stay if we are up there still? Perspective though. Last few years have been grim at times to say the least. Can't believe we are having these discussions. Long may it continue!!

I am not sure they are going to want to help a promotion rival finish above them!
