Marcelo Bielsa followed up his controversial Fair Play award with a defeat that was hardly merited but nonetheless pushed his Leeds team out of the automatic promotion places.
Charlton, whose manager Lee Bowyer was a favourite as a player at both clubs, won thanks to the scrappiest of goals in the 32nd minute, when a shot saved by goalkeeper Kiko Casilla rebounded off home forward Macauley Bonne and into the net.
Leeds will require plenty of good on-pitch action on Tuesday when they host West Bromwich Albion, who are the Championship’s new leaders as a result of this defeat and their own victory at Queens Park Rangers. Leeds dropped to fourth level on points with Charlton even though the visitors enjoyed 72 per cent of possession and fired off 16 more shots.
“We didn’t impose our superiority and that was the reason for what happened,” Bielsa said.
Bowyer predicted automatic promotion for Leeds but said: “We knew we were going to be under pressure at times because everyone who plays Leeds is, but we held our own and tactically got it spot on.”

Wise words indeed.
