I was impressed with your Nigerian author answer, and then shocked that it scored quite highly.

Things Fall Apart is considered, I guess, the great "African" novel in the context of liberation/end of and post-colonialism. But even then, 16 was amazingly high! Only two fewer than the wonderful Amerie. Wonder what the cross section was of people who knew both.
  • Well done Paddy and Rory, played a blinder there!

Well done! Those pointless trophies are very heavy. Little Miss Idle won one in lockdown.
Now, who's the git who knew Ellery Hanley?
Genuinely amazed that all of the League HOF were pointless except him. Unbelievable.

And yeah, the Pointless trophy is a big lump for something as small as it is. I confided in someone I know who'd won that my first thought was that it was so heavy it felt like you could use it as a murder weapon, and he said his first thought was exactly the same!
Genuinely thought you'd got all 3 when the first 2 went pointless! Rory pulling one out the bag with Woods who you werent sure of!

Just caught up. Well played Paddy, and Rory, but I guess he's not a Lifer.

I was amazed that Martin Offiah and Shaun Edwards (my guess) was a pointless answer but not Ellory Hanley. Hit the post with that one.

My money’s on “Doubtless” being the next day time quiz.

Has anyone ever (or known anyone) that has been in the “100 people” ?
On this show or Play your Cards Right.
I’ve always thought they just make it up.

No-one is ever told that the survey answers they're giving are for Pointless.  So you will never meet anyone who has been in the 100 people.

Redshift Research, a London-based market research company, has conducted all of the Pointless surveys online since the show began in 2009. They identify people to take part in a range of research surveys using their Crowdology online tool and pay them for the time they spend filling in questionnaires. The key thing is that the people polled aren’t aware they’re answering Pointless questions. You can’t apply to be one of the 100 people because that would then affect the outcome.

I think if I did a questionnaire that asked me to name a US president with an F in his name, or a question on Belgian jazz, I would surely mention it to someone I know at some point.
So, I have no reason to doubt the above, but I’m still sceptical.

You still wouldn't have been told that the survey was for Pointless.

But, for the sake of it, let's imagine that the producers of Pointless did, indeed, decide just to "make up" the answers.  Before making that decision, they would obviously weigh up the advantages of not completing independently-audited and managed surveys (ie saving some time and money) against the potential disadvantages (ie regulatory fines and sanctions from bodies like Ofcom and the ASA, legal action or civil lawsuits from contestants or contractual partners, criminal investigations in the case of proven fraud and severe reputational and commercial damage, impairing future business prospects and eroding public trust).

Given this, is your scepticism assuaged at all?

Yes, assuaged slightly, but not completely, as they do have previous for that kind of misdemeanour (if memory serves).
Call me a doubting Thomas, but if any kind of survey gave me 100 seconds to name breeds of poultry - I think it would register that it was for Pointless.

What do you mean by "they do have previous for that kind of misdemeanour"?  Is there any evidence of Pointless risking fines and sanctions, legal action, civil lawsuits, criminal investigations and severe reputational and commercial damage by not following the proper procedure?
