- The Boxing Day Test at the MCG is an Aussie tradition. This year it is New Zealand’s turn, their first Boxing Day Test there in 32 years. Over 16,000 kiwis will be there among the 80,000 crowd. If it is anything like the last Boxing Day Test between the two countries it will be a cracker.
On the final day with 15 minutes to go until close of play, Australia were 227 for 9. Richard Hadley had taken 5 wickets in the first innings and another 5 in the second. But it was new boy Danny Morrison bowling to Craig McDermott. He tore up to the crease generating devastating reverse swing and the ball pinged into McDermott’s pads before he could do anything about it. A roar went up for what looked (to kiwi eyes anyway) a plumb lbw. The 90,000 at the ground turned to umpire Dick French.
Not out.
Australia went on to win the Test and the series.
