The first half performance was good, the second half wasn't. I was reminded of Patience Slade's comment a few years ago about needing snorkels if they defended any deeper.
The worrying aspect though was the match stats re shots at goal; that Barnsley had 16 efforts to our 8 isn't the problem itself but that they had multiple attempts at goal from single passages of play.
Dillon Banks made that wonder save in the first half (one shot) but then there's a follow-up shot that hit the post (two). In the second half we had saves by Dillon, shots hitting the woodwork, goal-line clearances and all in the same phase of play.
Group all of these together and there were probably only about 10 Barnsley attacks leading to shots at goal which is a bit better than the stats but the problem is why can't we clear the ball or kill the play after the first attempt?
And why don't we seem able to create similar opportunities? We have a shot, it's saved or missed the target (occasionally scores!) and that's the end of our possession. Is it a lack of anticipation from our attacking players that they don't get into a position to take advantage of a rebound?
We only had three in midfield and we were getting swamped towards the end. I felt field should have come on instead and we should have played green upfront on his own.
But we got the win and if we beat the teams around us that we still have to play we should be OK.
Hopefully the loan business we did will be enough to help keep us up and bowyer and gallen can do a proper rebuild in the summer.
Up the Addicks.
