R J Fuller of Witherstone Way SE9

The museum were asked about a '50s reserve player, RJ Fuller, from Witherstone Way on the Coldharbour Estate.

Our records showed his name at registration as "Rubert"  but this letter, which he kept all his life, picking him for a game v Bexley says Robert.

We have searched  Colin Cameron's records and found the following:

Rupert J. FULLER

Registered with Football League as a Charlton player February 1950 - The football league had Rubert (not Rupert) as his forename but probably is Rupert. Played twice, first at Right half (midfield) then at right back for London Mid-week team in 1949/50.

Matches played:

London Mid-Week League

21. 1st March 1950 at The Valley (att. 370 (rec.£16 4s. 6d. less tax 2/6d.))

Charlton Athletic 4 (Leary, Parkes (2), Townsend): W.E. Marsh, J.D. Hewie, K. Kirsten, R.J. Fuller, J.P. Walls, C.B. Carroll, A.W. Pounder, S.E. Leary, A. Parkes, D.E. Townsend, D. Davies.

Crystal Palace 5

Referee: J. Secular. Linesmen: G.H. Giles, G.A. Smoker.

23. 15th March 1950 (a)

Watford 2

Charlton Athletic 0: A.G. Uytenbogaardt, R.J. Fuller, M. Allison, E.A. Croker, N.F. Nielson, C.B. Carroll, R. Lumley, D.G. Ufton, E.R. Firmani, J. Harrop, D. Davies.

Referee: A.W. Peacock . Linesmen: S.R. Giles, H.G. Bennett.

Despite playing just the two games he lined up alongside some famous names.

As you all know Eddie Firmani went on to play for Italy, Derek Ufton for England and John Hewie for Scotland. Malcolm Allison was better known as a manager of Man City and Crystal Palace but played for Charlton and West Ham.

The family really want some photos of him in action. The museum don't have any, unfortunately.

He did go on to play for Eirth and Belvedere.

He kept this letter all his life so it clearly meant something to him.

Any more info/pics to pass into the family welcome.

  • Bit heavy handed on the full stop and comma buttons on the old typewriter
  • George Robinson scored 45 goals in 254 games for Charlton including the two consecutive promotions and runners up in the first division.

He was 39 when he played his last game for Charlton in 1947 16 years after his debut.

He was then appointed coach and later Assistant Manager hence why he signed the letter.

So he can type as heavily as he likes : - )
  • Thanks @JohnfromNorfolk

    I'll pass that on

Henry.... Not sure what access to records you have but my old P. E. Teacher John Mallion/Malyion said he was on Charltons books at the time roughly Billy Bonds was here.. Do you know anything about him... Said he never made a first team appearance.
  • Will ask Paul Baker, who has Colin Cameron's records plus others scanned, to have a look.

I could be wrong but I think Eddie Firmani married his daughter.
