From U8s to the Championship - the rise of Dillon Phillips

Comments

  • Excellent article.

    Excellent goalkeeper.

    Nice bloke.

    One of our own.

    Hope he stays for ever.
  • Great article, thanks for the tip. Reminded me of why I love Charlton so much. I was starting to forget with all the Bonkers Shenanigans. On the way back from Stoke we serenaded him for about ten minutes on the tube. Took it all in great spirit. For me he was heading for player of the season this year.
  • He really is a very good writer. And a great article about a very good goalkeeper.
  • Great article, amazing to think that if Steer hadn't been recalled Dillon would have gone out on loan and would probably now be a footnote in our history
  • Have to say that when I first saw Phillips away at Sunderland last season, I was far from convinced by him, and thought that we would have to bring in yet another on-loan keeper.

However he has taken his chance superbly, and proved me totally wrong, to the extent that I am now worried that we may not be able to keep him if he keeps progressing at this rate!
  • Excellent article. I too worry that we won’t be able to hang on to Dills for much longer.
  • A Premier League star of the future. At the start of the season, I thought it may one day be with us, now just a distant dream.
Best keeper since Deano IMO, better than Carson, Elliot, Pope etc.
I believe he's also from my former home town Hornchurch.
The last Addick from there wasn't too bad either!
  • Has just been released by Rotherham. Id still have him back as #1
  • I'd like to think we'll mainly bring in players who can grow with us like Jones, Ramsay, Edwards, Coventry etc and there won't be too many who come in to do a job. Mannion's done well enough but I don't have the same confidence he'd step up comfortably to the Championship if we get there compared to those four.

  • Phillips is an absolute class above Mannion or AMB.  Whether we could get better, I don't know, but as a 1 or 2 I would be delighted with him.  A proper character too who would help with squad morale.

  • Didn't look a class above anything in their game against Wycombe. I switched on to watch it for a while and he was dreadful, allowing Wycombe to score twice from crosses that he should have dealt with.
    Quite happy with Mannion.
  • I’d have him ahead of AMB but there are much better keepers out there .

Game is about opinions and on this one I have to say in my opinion is he is no way a class above our current keepers.

Look at his career since he left us. An unsuccessful spell at Cardiff, a loan to a Belgium club and 19 games at Rotherham.

Seems a great lad for sure but he's not a marked improvement over our current keepers.
  • He’s also not someone for Mannion to learn from which is part of what Jones wants from a No 1. They’re very similar in styles
  • If we are in the Championship next season, we can and will be doing much better than Dillon Phillips.

As opposed to Mannion's career before he joined us?

Ultimately, career stats for anyone over, say, the age of 27 (by which time level of talent is clear) are a fair reflection of capability. Those stats would suggest Phillips above Mannion.

  • I know I'm in the minority here but I think he is really overrated, the fact he's been released by a mid-table L1 side probably points towards why we shouldn't be aiming for him.
Depends why he's been released though... the clubs budget ahead of next season, the player not wanting to stay... Could be just as much reason for a player to be "released", as well as the club just not wanting that individual anymore, which is often the instant assumption.
  • According to Rotherham Advertiser his form has been "up and down", but you're right we don't know the specifics.

Think another interesting stat though is, despite the fact he's approaching 30, his season with us in the Championship is the only one where's he has been No.1 throughout and played over 40 games.

That Lincoln lad should be who we're looking for.

Would any of us want him if he had played for Sunderland, Cardiff and then released by Rotherham? I’m not sure we would.

It would’ve been the same reaction as the signing of Mannion and it turns out he’s been decent enough. So it’s not necessarily a reason to knock Dillon as a keeper.

But I do think we already have someone at Dillon Phillips level and I would want the next goalkeeper to be a clear step above what we already have.

  • Phillips is better than what we have now, but not good enough to be what we are looking for in a number 1, even if we don’t go up
