He's the punchline of a joke.

How do you turn a duck into a soul singer?

Put it in a microwave and wait until it's Bill Withers.

I think his singing was better than my jokes.

Brings make memories of working in Tenerife.

We would sing this in the bar we use to go to in the late 80's.

Lots of football lads on doors etc and we all got on well and happy memories.

Lovely Day was our first dance at our wedding.

Some of the between-song banter on Live At Carnegie Hall is almost stand-up quality.

He had a great live band, too, my obvious favourite being drummer James Gadson with his Brentford Nylons syrup and his 16th note hi-hat grooves.

Put the Carnegie Hall album on again this morning.  He could certainly entertain with his stories and banter, as well as an amazing voice.  Rest in Peace Bill.

Listening to "Lovely Day" always takes me back to the year 1979.
I had taken a ferry from Gt Yarmounth to Denmark, driven to the top of the country, taken a ferry across to Southern Norway in a estate car full of equipment and personal belongings, to work and live in Norway for a spell.
As I drove the couple of hundred miles through beautiful forest and mountains with clear blue sky's to my destination, "Lovely day" was being played on my car radio.
Everything seemed so exciting and promising.
The song still seems so fresh and I never tire of hearing it.
It takes me back to those heady days, full of nostalgia.
    Silly old bugger.

Music is the most powerful mechanism by which to take yourself back to a previous time in life
