Move to Catford agreed. Various gentlemen of Catford would purchase the new ground and pay for construction.

Gentlemen of Catford attend board meeting and 3 join the board. The company take over the assets of Catford Southend for £500. Money to be raised by a new share issue.

  • "various gentlemen of Catford".

    My, how times change!

Letter from Humphreys requesting 2nd payment

That little mention of Northern Nomads FC brought some memories back, when my old man moved us oop north in the 70's, he became their treasurer. They were quite a famous old club up here back in the day.
This makes fascinating reading, cheers for posting
  • This is fascinating stuff, the Catford move had faded into the mists of time, even by the time I started going, 50 odd (cough) years ago.

I wouldn't mind betting thst the toilet repairs that got postponed did got done - probably in 1992.
  • The average home league gate for season 22/23 had dropped to 6,100 which was disappointing but this was the season of the FA giant killing cup run. The 2nd round home game against Preston attracted 22,490. 3rd round against WBA 31,489 and in the 4th round against Bolton another record crowd of 41,023. These attendances at least showed the potential was within the district.
Didn’t the wall at the north end collapse during the Bolton game?

https://youtu.be/nQOK3bfMAbw Certainly did, one story was that all the profits from the game went in compensation.

Yes and also if you watch the above footage you will see a crowd surge and collapse onto the pitch to the right side of the west stand. Watch the crowd in the first piece of match action.
  • This is absolutely fascinating to follow. Thank you for posting @charltonnick

Thanks LenGlover , it's a tale of financial woe , bad decisions and only gets worse
  • Catford , 21 year lease at a rent of £300 per year. Estimated cost of new ground £15,000 which includes removal of stand from the Valley. Humphreys to be the contractors.

Initial response to share issue ' not very encouraging '. The board hoped to rent out The Valley.

  • "Stayed at the Mount,
We should have stayed at the Mount"
  • This decision turned out to be crucial , ' Grandstand to be moved after 1st season at Catford '. A 3rd team to play at The Valley in the Kent league.

I think , having read the minutes that the story of compensation cases is exaggerated. There is mention of a couple of claims , one of which is shown in one of the following board meeting minutes.

One of his descendents is a regular poster on CL.
    Wills or Harry?

  • Board meetings of 24/7 & 15/8/23. The new registered office would now be 25 Bromley road , Catford SE6.

After this meeting above there is a gap of a year in the minutes. The last game at The Valley was on 8/12/23 in front of 5,000. The first game played at The Mount was on 22/12/23 in front of 6,000. This was a novelty and soon the crowds were lower than at The Valley. In this 1923-24 season 9 games were played at The Valley , average att. 6,400. 12 games were played at Catford with an average crowd of 4,500 , the highest being 10,000 against QPR. The last game of the season attracted 1,000. ' We should have stayed at The Valley ' rang around the ground according to one gentleman of Catford , Mick Everett.
