The likes of Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone and Dusty Springfield were still powerful in the 70s

Judee Sill. Great singer, amazing song writer.

Dead at 35 and a remarkable and gruelling back story.

Aretha and Karen Carpenter, as mentioned, would be worthy winners and just for the reason I mentioned in the make thread Maddy Prior would be an excellent choice. I also love Joan Armatrading too.

However, for her longevity and the fact that she is a brilliant songwriter too, I would go for Carole King.

Debbie Harry - OK maybe not the best voice but she still managed to encourage me to knock one out into a sock

    1970s?  She died in 1970.

Vaguely remember singing this with you in that place in France, drunk, and we then decided going in the dodgems, still drunk, at three in the morning was a good idea.

    Long pont?

October 1970, which makes her a female voice of the 70s if I'm not mistaken. Definitely not a beauty, but boy was she a sexy lady.

    Longpont it was.

    Remember the shooting range?

    And the Kir Royale.

Always think of Dusty as 60s

    Karen Carpenter was wonderful.

There were a lot of good lovers rock singers like Janet Key.
