  • Having watched the Bury and Wigan clips, not only is my heart broken for the fellow fans, (I can not face the other clubs until another day), the incompetence of the EFL and its owners' test screams out at you: pathetic, lamentable and contemptible. Where does football go with people like this at the helm?
Fantastic website and well done whoever engineered this. Thank you so much and let's get it out there to fellow fans.

If you want to sign the petition (rather than test the broken link) go to https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/331589
I would like to sign but is this only open to UK citizens. I have citizenship by birth but have not lived in UK for over 60 years. Can someone let me know.

Strictly speaking it probably is only meant for uk voters, and a post code is required to identify who your MP is, but the UK doesn't exist in isolation and plenty of fans live overseas so I'd say give it a go. You could use postcode SE7 8BL if you need to.

Exactly this. Or you can ask a friend or relative if you can borrow their postcode. They mainly want your postcode because they track the geographic distribution of signatures
  • I notice that doing a Google search on www.theefl.co.uk brings up Charlton Life as it's top result, followed by the official EFL site, then Reddit. There's then all sorts of stuff somehow related to football at the EFL's level.  The only one I can see that relates directly to the site is the Barnsley Fans Forum.

I think the  most basic element of search engine optimisation is getting links on other sites that are directly related to the subject. I'd think a good starting point would be to get as many fan's sites to mention it. Of course the holy grail would be to get links from official club sites, that may prove rather more difficult.

Brilliant. I know who did it but not for me to announce. But the pedigree is obvious.

Dwell on the level of EFL incompetence the actual website exposes for a moment.

We know that Shaun Harvey paid himself £360,000 p.a. as CEO. Further down the food chain? Not a lot, it seems. Not enough for a digital marcomms manager with the basic nous to know that while you may only use the efl.com domain, you must also spend the £50 or so to buy similar domains such as  theefl.co.uk
otherwise some other people will legitimately buy it and potentially set about causing massive reputational damage

Like for example a guerilla unit of Charlton fans.

Its not as if they weren't warned. I was in the meet when Harvey asked "right then, whats the difference between CAST and CARD?"

    Take a bow, warriors...

    Are you sure @PragueAddick?
Sorry? What exactly do you wish to dispute in that line?
At one time you could certainly do that; purchase a domain and hold companies to ransom to greater or lessor degrees but somewhere at the back of my mind where I store useless info, I thought that was no longer legal (the 'ransom' bit, that is).

I did not mention ransom. Some people on Twitter are.

Reputational damage is something else. It s why most companies with a consumer profile as high the EFL will buy up to 50 domains that get close to their main one in the web surfer’s perception.

This is all about reputational damage.
It's barely possible to damage the EFL's reputation.
Their reputation was already rock bottom :-)
  • Is there a way we can get this mentioned on all other teams forums? The more fans that contact their local MPs the more it will be heard of in Westminster? Or target all MPs social media accounts?
  • Could someone ( one of you English grammar experts)! please check this for me before I start sending out emails to MPs!

    Dear Sir,

I am contacting you today to ask for your assistance in raising awareness of the plight of English football!

The EFL have again been found floundering in their incompetency to be able to govern our beautiful game. Please, all I am asking of you is that you could raise some awareness amongst other MPs so we can get to the bottom of what is going wrong with our national sport!

Please could you take the time to have a look at the link provided which will give some background in to the failings of the EFL.

I am originally from S.E. London and my team is Charlton Athletic who are going the same way as Bury FC and in grave danger of being expelled from the football league due to the EFL’s extremely poor fit and proper persons test which is supposed to vet all new owners.

I thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon

    Kind regards

Please fell free to add/delete anything so I don't look too much of a numpty!
  • I run my own marketing agency and we do lots of search engine optimisation work - if whoever made the site wants someone else’s perspective I’d be happy to take a look!

Getting as many people from different websites/sources clicking on the link will definitely help too so I can’t see any harm in reaching out to different forums.

The website is really very very good and deserves to be seen by football fans everywhere. If you have the know how on how to get it to come up near to where the actual EFL website is when people search then that would be amazing if you could link up with the creator/s

The other thing that could be improved is the way it's displayed.. e.g you can't link to the Charlton or Bury etc pages individually. Being coded like that also seems to mean that when you share the link on WhatsApp (and I guess Twitter?) It doesn't load a preview of the page, just the link so people won't be as enticed to click it.

The final thing I thought that would be quite funny is to pay for Ads so it comes up when people type in EFL or whatever but not sure the benefits outweigh the costs

It looks good. I would change two things:

    1. Drop the first exclamation mark. That gives greater effect to the second one although personally I wouldn't use any exclamation marks in such a letter.

    2. For the third sentence I would write: Football has been an important part of the fabric of our society for centuries and the professional football clubs that are now suffering, due to the inability of the EFL to administer club ownership, have each been part of their communities for over a hundred years. I  therefore, with all due respect, implore you to urgently use your position to raise awareness .................................

Just a thought, which maybe someone more skilled than me might like to play with...

I wonder whether putting the link to theefl.co.uk after a skit based on Martin Niemöllers famous quotation might help get some fans from other clubs interested enough to look at it?

    The original reads:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

I was thinking along the lines of:

First they came for Leighton Orient, and I did not speak out—because I was not from Essex.

Then they came for Bury, and I did not speak out— because I was not from the North West

Then they came for Charlton Athletic, and I did not speak out—because I was not from London.

Then they came for my club—and there was no one left to speak for it.

Orient is East London, good idea

  • Got a prompt reply from my localMP

Thank you for contacting me regarding the current governance of The English Football League (EFL) and the very unfortunate circumstances of clubs such as Bury, Bolton and Charlton Athletic.

I agree that for many areas across Britain the local football club is the heart and soul of the community and incompetent and unsuitable ownership can, and has, caused unnecessary damage to certain clubs, with the ramifications of this having considerable impact on local jobs and the wider communities.  Indeed, having Crawley Town, a Football League club situated within my constituency, I fully appreciate the positive impact and community spirit a local football club can provide.

Given this I would support measures to introduce a more robust vetting process for prospective owners, to help prevent clubs from entering into administration and receiving subsequent penalties from the EFL.

I will directly raise this issue with the Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport when I next speak with them.

Should you require any further assistance please do let me know.

    Kind regards

    Henry Smith MP

    Crawley Constituency

House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA

Brilliant response. My MP for Sevenoaks, Laura Trott, hasn't ordained to respond except for the automated reply from her researcher. Poor.

Good to see the links to petition and efl partners auto-tweet are now working with a normal click.

Any news on the optimisation discussions @lancashire lad?
