NOVATION
From the Brandsmiths to Southall letter. Cited by @Henry Irving and others on the Southall - Bassini thread.
Is it:
a) The opposite of an ovation - a special moment where nobody claps.
b) A legal term for the replacement of an old contract with a new one.
c) The act of getting egg on your face.4 -

MOUNTEBANK
Making its 3rd appearance today courtesy of @McBobbin on the Brexit thread, just two days after its previous mention by @NornIrishAddick on the same thread. Its debut was brought to us by @ColinTat back in July on the Birmingham v Charlton Post Match Thread.
Is it:
a) A financial institution operated by the Canadian Mounted Police.
b) A small mountain named after a monocled boxer.
c) A charlatan or swindler.0 -

Which is, of course, a first cousin of the pettifogger (or in Mr. Farnell's case, pettifogging viper).2 -
And tomorrow's word of the day writes itself!2

PETTIFOGGER
Word of the day is running a little late due to all the excitement on the TS and BS threads, but here we are as promised with @NornIrishAddick's Pettifogger.
Is it:
a) As mentioned above, a first cousin of the mountebank.
b) A small device used to emit dry ice at stage shows and discotheques (compare with grandfogger, a somewhat larger device used for Ibiza raves, Pink Floyd concerts and Vincent Price films).
c) A pouch of potpourri which is sewn into a ladies petticoat to counter the effects of flatulence, dry gusset, wet gusset, stink creek and associated maladies.0
