Eric Gill (One of Sam Bartram's many understudies)

Found this article. He must be one of our oldest surviving players at 90.

Thought it might be of interest to some.

Slightly unfortunate name to have to share! Unless you like classic fonts and are willing to overlook...a lot of stuff
  • Love how other clubs even now write "the great Sam Bartram"

    Interesting read

Good read, Len. Enjoyed that. Thanks for posting.

  • He was about 4th choice keeper behind Bartram, Uytenbogaardt and Marsh thats why he moved on. In those days when the first team was away the reserves would be at home on Saturday afternoon and I often saw him play along with plenty of others who didn't make many first team appearances because there were no subs
then. Malcom Allison went to West Ham for the same reason.

Being Bartram's understudy must have been a healthy occupation. Albert Uytenbogaardt is still alive and, like Eric Gill, over 90. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Uytenbogaardt

Thanks for posting that link Len, my late father would have known the name but the only understudy to Sam Bartram, albeit for one season in 1955/56, I saw play was Frank Reed.

Typical Charlton, played one game and conceded the losing goal in the 89th minute. ;) 2-3 at Old Trafford.
