This has got to be the most brilliant of throw ins:

This one is better (from the same player) - he actually scores!

  • When I was about 12, my school team went on a football trip to Connecticut. One of the teams we played had a gymnast they'd converted that did that same throw. He had a 25 metre run up! It never amounted to anything, but we'd never seen anything like it.

You can’t score from a throw in.

Not directly no.  However it seems the keeper got a hand to it.

  • Wow Incredible....
  • "Can't score from a throw in" has to be one of those pointless laws that should be removed from the book.

It's bizarre that a player taking a throw is awarded the goal if it is deflected by a defender. So you can sort of "score" from a throw-in (it qualifies for the golden boot etc) but the rules say you can't!

I'm sure I saw one of those about 25 years ago. I always liked Ernie Hunt's free kick in 1970. It was banned shortly afterwards.

  • In the 1994/95 season, the Isthmian League replaced throw-ins with kick-ins. They were ideal for teams with a big number 9.

Surely it’s an own goal, as it wouldn’t be a goal if nobody touched it.

  • I have mentioned the following in the past, but worth repeating here. Many years ago when I was a linesman on the National League, that league was sometimes used for season-long tinkerings of the laws. One such tinkering was that throw ons were replaced by a indirect free kick at the point to ball left the field of play. I guess the logic being that outfield players dont otherwise use their hands at any other time. The "trial" only lasted one season and normal service was resumed the next. We, officials, never got any feedback on the trial.

What were your thoughts on it and how it worked? Arsene Wenger has made some comments on it in the past

Obviously a lot of long kicks into the opposing penalty area and thus made for more goalscoring opportunities. The disappointing aspect was the lack of end of season feedback as to why it was not adopted.

Another trial was that a line was drawn the whole width of the pitch, in line with the 18 yard (penalty box). Players could only be offside if they received the ball goal side of that line.

Why can't you flick it up? Weird rule or was it that he lifted it with both feet from a DB situation?

Could only be done by touching the ball more than once
